Right. Ford. (F 1.66%). Let’s just say it wasn’t a stellar week. Down 13.8%, according to the folks at S&P Global Market Intelligence. Not exactly the kind of return that keeps me in overpriced lattes, is it? And look, the oil price jump – the biggest weekly leap in history, apparently – didn’t help. It’s always something, isn’t it? Automakers, cruise lines, airlines… we were all bracing for impact. But with Ford, well, there was an extra layer of… let’s call it ‘complexity’. I mean, it’s never just the oil price, is it?
Recall Headaches, Still
They announced recalls this week. Nearly 2.4 million vehicles. Rearview cameras, windshield wipers… the usual suspects. Honestly, it’s like they’re actively trying to give me a reason to diversify. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is having a field day, I suspect. And it’s not exactly a new problem. Remember last month? 4.3 million vehicles for towing-trailer lights and brakes. They’re trying to fix some of it with software updates, which is… clever, I guess. But it still chips away at the margins, and, more importantly, the reputation. Investors don’t like surprises, and constant recalls are basically a flashing neon sign screaming ‘potential problem’.
They brought in a ‘quality czar’ last year, Jim Baumbick. Sounds impressive, doesn’t it? Like someone who’s going to magically wave a wand and make all the problems disappear. CEO Jim Farley’s been talking a good game about quality improvements, but… well, the recalls speak for themselves, don’t they? It’s like watching someone build a sandcastle while the tide’s coming in. Admirable effort, ultimately futile.
So, you have this cascade of bad news – the recalls, the oil price shock – and then you throw in a bit of geopolitical anxiety in the Middle East. It’s a perfect storm, really. Investors get spooked, they start selling, and suddenly you’re explaining a rather unpleasant dip in portfolio performance. And frankly, explaining is exhausting. I’m starting to think a career as a lighthouse keeper might be less stressful. It’s just… a lot. A lot of potential downside, and not nearly enough upside to make it worth the grey hairs.
