Rotta The Hutt Is Jacked In The Mandalorian & Grogu: ‘A Gladiator Of Sorts’

Empire revealed a new look at Rotta the Hutt from The Mandalorian & Grogu, and he’s drastically different from how fans remember the character.

Jabba’s son is back, grown up, and somehow absolutely jacked.

Jeremy Allen White (The Bear) also provides the voice of Rotta the Hutt.

Rotta is a gladiator “fighting in the pits”

I’ve been following The Mandalorian & Grogu, and I was really surprised when Din Djarin and Grogu met Rotta. He’s a Hutt, but definitely not like any we’ve seen before – he’s got a totally different vibe!

Director Jon Favreau hints that Rotta will have a different personality in the new film, suggesting the character has experienced a difficult past.

Favreau describes the character Rotta as being at his best while battling in a dangerous, arena-like setting, comparing him to a gladiator.

This fits with the latest picture of Rotta, who now appears as a fierce warrior rather than a relaxed criminal leader.

Yes, there’s some Huttese

According to White, the performance will feature a small amount of Huttese – the language Jabba the Hutt spoke in ‘Return of the Jedi’ – but the majority of Rotta’s lines will be in standard galactic Basic.

“There’s a little bit of Huttese,” White teases, though he says he’ll mostly be speaking Basic.

White also says he revisited Jabba’s scenes to help shape the performance.

“My speaking voice changes [as Rotta],” he adds. “It was helpful, of course, to listen to Jabba.”

Favreau compares Rotta to Creed

Favreau suggests Rotta’s background might involve growing up in the shadow of Jabba the Hutt, drawing a parallel to the character of Adonis Creed in the Creed films.

Jon Favreau wondered what it’s like growing up with a famous parent, specifically if you’re the child of Jabba the Hutt. He finds it interesting to consider how that background would shape someone’s life and career. He enjoys thinking about the challenges and opportunities that would present.

Perhaps there’s more to Rotta than meets the eye. He could be a determined individual attempting to establish his own identity in a galaxy that only knows him as Jabba the Hutt’s son.

The Mandalorian & Grogu hits May 22, 2026.
