A 17th-century portrait at the National Portrait Gallery in London is getting a lot of attention online because people say it looks remarkably like Finn Wolfhard, the actor known for his role in Stranger Things. The trend started with a TikTok video posted on March 2nd by user @mica_spamx, which has since been viewed over 48,000 times and received more than 12,000 likes.
A TikTok video is circulating showing a 1634 painting by Anthony van Dyck of Cesare Alessandro Scaglia. A woman in the video zooms in on the portrait, noticing a striking resemblance to actor Finn Wolfhard. She playfully captions the video, asking if anyone else sees the similarity, and mentions a friend pointed it out to her.
TikTok users were immediately struck by how much the painting looked like the celebrity. Comments flooded in, with one person writing, “It’s seriously uncanny, it actually looks like him!” Others agreed, saying they had the same thought when they first saw it. Many found the resemblance funny, with comments like “He’s a legend!” and “That’s really creepy.” Several people even shared photos they’d taken of the painting, proving that others visiting the gallery noticed the striking similarity too.

The comments section quickly filled with jokes and astonishment, as people playfully suggested that actor Finn Wolfhard—or someone who looked exactly like him from the 1600s—had been painted by van Dyck centuries before Wolfhard was even born. Art experts point out that van Dyck was known for painting incredibly realistic portraits of nobles and other prominent individuals, which might explain why modern viewers think they see familiar faces in his old paintings.
People often spot similarities between modern faces and those in old portraits. Here, the combination of Finn Wolfhard’s young appearance and the artist van Dyck’s detailed style created a particularly noticeable resemblance.
