Disney Cancels Likely Woke Live-Action Robin Hood Following Remake Flops

Disney has scrapped its planned live-action Robin Hood movie.

Director Carlos López Estrada revealed during a Reddit Q&A that the film project he was working on has been cancelled. He stated simply, “It’s dead, sadly.”

Estrada was originally set to direct the project when it was first announced in 2020. The director, who is known for films like Blindspotting and Raya and the Last Dragon, thought the movie had a lot of promise before Disney cancelled it.

Estrada used the word ‘sadly’ because he genuinely believed the project had something unique and promising. They had developed some remarkably good music for it, and he was disappointed it didn’t work out.

He mentioned he hasn’t forgotten about the idea and is interested in exploring it again, potentially at a different company than Disney.

“I keep daydreaming about doing it independently with different characters,” he said.

Another Live-Action Remake Bites The Dust

Disney has cancelled the project amid criticism and poor financial results from some of its recent live-action remakes.

Notably, Snow White performed poorly in theaters, costing the studio around $300 million. Before its release, the movie faced a lot of problems, including public criticism and negative reactions from fans.

Disney’s The Little Mermaid didn’t perform as well as hoped. The film didn’t make as much money as Disney usually expects from its live-action remakes.

As a film buff, I’ve noticed a clear pattern with this studio for a long time now. They’ve really been leaning into making live-action remakes of their beloved animated movies, and it’s been a pretty successful strategy. Think about films like The Lion King, Aladdin, and Beauty and the Beast – they were huge box office successes!

However, newer live-action remakes haven’t performed as well, and there are reports that Disney is now making fewer of them.

The upcoming Robin Hood movie was initially intended for release on Disney+ as a musical update to the beloved 1973 animated version.

This adaptation used animal characters and is still one of Disney’s most famous versions of the Robin Hood story.

The film studio is rethinking its strategy for remakes, which means several projects that have been in the works for a long time are now being scrapped.

Despite the pullback, Disney is still developing at least one major live-action remake.

A real-life movie version of Tangled is in development. Unlike the recent remakes of Snow White and The Little Mermaid, this new Tangled film will stay true to the look of the original animated movie’s characters.

This decision hints that Disney might be trying to get back on track after facing criticism that some of its recent live-action remakes changed too much from the original stories.

For now, though, the planned live-action Robin Hood is officially off the table.
