Terrence Howard Breaks Silence on Why He Was Fired From ‘Iron Man 2’

Terrence Howard believes a disagreement with a film producer years ago might be the reason he wasn’t asked back for the Iron Man sequels. He recently discussed this on the PBD Podcast, sharing his thoughts on why he didn’t reprise his role.

Terrence Howard originally played James “Rhodey” Rhodes, a close friend and ally of Tony Stark (played by Robert Downey Jr.), in the first Iron Man movie in 2008. However, Don Cheadle took over the role when Iron Man 2 came out in 2010.

During a podcast interview, Howard recalled an experience from 2007 at the Venice Film Festival while promoting the movie The Brave One, which he starred in with Jodie Foster. A reporter questioned him about why his name wasn’t featured more prominently than Foster’s in the film’s credits, and Howard admitted he’d wondered the same thing himself.

Joel Silver, the producer, later spoke to Howard and explained what happened. Howard felt upset by the way Silver delivered the explanation.

Howard remembered that Joel Silver explained to him why his name wasn’t featured more prominently in the movie’s credits. Silver told him that Jodie Foster was the lead star, and if Howard received an Oscar nomination, it would be in the Supporting Actor category, not Best Actor.

The actor said he responded by warning the producer about how he was spoken to.

I told him, ‘I appreciate you letting me know, and now it makes sense. However, I want you to remember that I’m a person just like you, and if you ever speak to me like that again, there will be consequences.’

Howard thinks the argument might have caused problems down the line. He noted that Susan Downey, wife of Robert Downey Jr., was a producer on the same film as Silver.

Howard explained that he lost Iron Man eight months later and believes those previous events contributed to it.

But other sources hint at different explanations for the change. Entertainment Weekly reports that director Jon Favreau wasn’t completely happy with Terrence Howard’s performance in the first Iron Man movie and was already considering a smaller role for the character in the sequel.

Howard acknowledged in the interview that his own behavior might have hindered his career at times. He recalled some advice he’d gotten years ago from actor Denzel Washington.

Howard recalled someone telling him, ‘Your fists are clenched.’ They explained that producers were trying to help him succeed by offering opportunities, but he was holding back and missing out because he refused to accept them.

Howard was surprised to learn he wouldn’t be reprising his role in Iron Man 2. Don Cheadle then stepped in to play Rhodey, and continued with the character in subsequent Marvel movies.

Howard achieved significant success on TV, most notably as Lucious Lyon in the popular series Empire. He’s also recognized for his roles in films such as Crash and Hustle & Flow, for which he received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.
