Henry Cavill revealed that the most challenging aspect of filming Man of Steel wasn’t the flying, but the scenes where he appeared shirtless. He explained that he underwent a very strict diet and intense training for six weeks to achieve the necessary physique for the role.
Henry Cavill explained that he drastically reduced his daily calorie intake from approximately 5,000 to around 1,500 while training hard. This helped him achieve a very low body fat percentage of about 7%, which is typically only seen in competitive bodybuilders.
After finishing the scenes, director Zack Snyder and producer Debby generously rewarded Henry Cavill with a feast. “They got me an apple pie, a whole tub of ice cream, and a large pizza,” Cavill remembered. “I ate everything and then completely passed out from a food coma.”
Released in 2013, Man of Steel is the story of how Clark Kent became Superman. The film, directed by Zack Snyder and co-written by David S. Goyer and Christopher Nolan, stars Henry Cavill as Superman, alongside a talented cast including Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Kevin Costner, and Diane Lane. It follows Clark’s journey as he learns about his alien heritage and chooses to use his powers to defend Earth, ultimately confronting the powerful villain General Zod.
Warner Bros. started planning a new Superman movie in 2008, aiming for a fresh start to the series. A legal decision in 2009 gave the rights to Superman’s original story back to the family of its creator, Jerry Siegel, which meant the studio needed to begin filming by 2011 to avoid problems. After talking about ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ Nolan shared a story idea from Goyer, and Zack Snyder was brought on as director in October 2010. Filming started in August 2011 in West Chicago, Illinois, and continued in Vancouver and Plano, Illinois.
Although critics had varying opinions, the film was very successful financially, bringing in $670 million globally with a production cost of $225–258 million. It ranked as the ninth-highest-grossing movie of 2013. A follow-up, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, was released in 2016, and a new Superman film, starring David Corenswet, launched a reboot of the DC Universe in 2025.
