SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE UK’s First Teaser Feels Very Familiar

The UK has a fantastic history of creating hilarious shows like Monty Python’s Flying Circus, I’m Alan Partridge, Fawlty Towers, The Office, and Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace, so it’s perfectly capable of making great comedy on its own. However, combining that uniquely British humor with the Saturday Night Live format could be a really winning combination.

This preview feels like an American impression of a British Saturday Night Live. It perfectly copies the original show’s opening cityscape and even the line, “Live, from London, it’s Saturday night” is unintentionally humorous, especially when followed by a list of very British names. The cast includes Hammed Animashaun, Ania Magliano, Ayoade Bamgboye, Celeste Dring, George Fouracres, Larry Dean, Annabel Marlow, Al Nash, Jack Shep, Emma Sidi, and Paddy Young. (It seems we’re also importing one of the biggest issues with the American SNL: a cast that’s too large.)

I’m pretty sure these people are real performers, not characters in a parody, because I recognize a few of them from the show Taskmaster – seriously, it’s the best show you’re missing out on!

Does this preview for the UK version of Saturday Night Live suggest the two shows will be very alike? Possibly! And that could be a good thing. The SNL format is clearly successful, but we’ll all have to watch and see if it catches on in the UK – live and in person.
