As an ardent fan, I find Sanaa Lathan‘s journey incredibly inspiring. Her courage to confront and conquer her struggle with alcohol is nothing short of commendable. It’s fascinating how she transformed her personal tribulations into powerful performances on screen, making each character resonate with a depth that only real-life experiences can provide.
In an open conversation, actress Sanaa Lathan discussed her personal journey with alcohol and how abandoning it significantly impacted her life and career. Remarkably, she portrayed a character grappling with alcohol addiction in one of her recent projects, mirroring her own experiences.
Sanaa Lathan has opened up about her personal journey with alcohol
Sanna Lathan disclosed that alcohol gradually diminished her energy levels, eroding her mental health and equilibrium. However, it wasn’t until 2018 that she truly recognized the impact of alcohol on her life, which led to a transformation and ultimately brought about complete sobriety for her.
Speaking about her life experiences, Sanaa shared that her mother was incredibly inspiring as she never drank, yet she was one of the happiest and most energetic individuals Sanaa had ever encountered. This contrast between a lack of alcohol consumption and happiness made little sense to her in terms of society’s connection between drinking and fun or livelihood. Upon discovering the harmful effects of alcohol on the body, Sanaa gained insight into how detrimental it could be for her, both physically and mentally. This knowledge led her to prioritize abstaining from alcohol, which ultimately contributed to her success in her professional pursuits.
She achieved recent career milestones, she notes, due to her sobriety; as being sober now allows her ample time to contemplate how sobriety fostered the mental fortitude required to tackle her most challenging endeavors.
After giving up alcohol, Sanaa has taken on the role of director and starred in the 2022 hit “On the Come Up”, received an Emmy nomination for her guest appearance in “Succession” in 2021, and produced and acted in the Netflix film “Nappily Ever After”. She feels that the skills needed to handle these demanding roles and tasks would not have been within her reach if she had continued drinking. In her own words, “I genuinely believe I wouldn’t have been able to direct a major studio movie without stopping. There are things in my life now that I don’t think I could have maintained.”
In the Hulu series “The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat,” which is an adaptation from Edward Kelsey Moore’s novel and focuses on the lives of three lifelong friends, Sanaa Lathan plays Barbara Jean in the 1960s setting of Indiana. This role, where she portrays a character struggling with various pains, seems to be almost therapeutic for her as it mirrors some aspects of her own experiences. Previously, Sanaa has played characters who rely on alcohol as a crutch.
In her own life stories, Sanaa finds a connection that lets her deeply understand Barbara Jean’s emotional complexities, making this role particularly meaningful to her. She commented, “Each character I portray seems to leave an impact,” often striking a chilling resemblance between the on-screen personas and her personal journeys off-camera.
Via her character, Sanaa delves into topics such as suffering, recovery, and the challenges of self-treatment with substances – issues she personally grappled with. She also acknowledged that playing this role provided a sense of release, stating, “At one point in my life, I relied on alcohol for self-medication.”
Sanáa Lathan’s path serves as a powerful testament to the transformative power of self-reflection, showing how overcoming difficult challenges can lead to positive changes in one’s life. Her triumph over addiction, self-discovery, grabbing fresh opportunities, and personal and professional victories are beautifully interwoven in her story.
