Netflix Reveals ‘Alexander,’ Jacob Tierney’s Epic Series on Aristotle and Alexander the Great

Netflix is creating a new series called “Alexander” about the life of Alexander the Great and his famous teacher, Aristotle. Jacob Tierney, who previously worked on “Heated Rivalry,” is writing, directing, and overseeing the project, as announced by Thea Glassman on March 5, 2026.

This project is inspired by Annabel Lyon’s novel, The Golden Mean, and tells the story of Alexander the Great as a young prince. It focuses on his formative years, learning from his tutor, Aristotle, amidst a backdrop of palace secrets, passionate love affairs, and fierce battles. The story reveals how their relationship influenced Alexander’s rise and the creation of his vast empire.

Tierney shared that she’s been captivated by Annabel Lyon’s novel, The Golden Mean, for years and has long wanted to adapt it for the screen. She and Brendan are thrilled to be working with Aggregate and Netflix to bring this exciting story to audiences.

As a film critic, I’m always interested in who’s backing a project, and this one has a solid team. Michael Costigan and Jason Bateman, through their company Aggregate Films, are executive producing, which is great news. They’re joined by Brendan Brady of Accent Aigu Entertainment, adding another layer of experienced support. It suggests the filmmakers are serious about quality and have the resources to deliver.

Jinny Howe, who leads Netflix’s scripted series team for the US and Canada, commended Jacob Tierney’s creative direction for the upcoming series. She stated, “Jacob Tierney is a remarkably talented and sought-after creator, and we’re excited to collaborate with him on Alexander. The series offers a fresh take on the classic mentor-protégé dynamic, delivering a story that feels both grand in scope and deeply personal.”

This series tells the story of Alexander’s journey to becoming a powerful leader, starting with his upbringing as the son of King Philip II and Queen Olympias. A gifted and charismatic military strategist, Alexander built a massive empire spanning Asia Minor, Syria, and Egypt. He established over 70 cities and his influence resonated across three continents, leaving a lasting historical impact.

When it was first published in 2010, Lyon’s The Golden Mean received high praise. The Guardian noted that the book vividly portrays Alexander’s early life with writing that is both exciting and beautifully timeless.

Netflix hasn’t revealed when “Alexander” will be released or who will star in it, but they promise to share more information about the cast and how filming is going in the near future.
