As a huge fan of Firefly, I’m getting seriously excited! It looks like Nathan Fillion – you know, from The Rookie and, of course, Firefly – is hinting at a reunion! Over the last few weeks, he’s been posting these really cool videos of him visiting each of his old castmates. He’s literally knocking on their doors! He’s checked in with Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, Summer Glau, and Jewel Staite, and they’ve all dropped hints that a big announcement is coming on March 15th. I’m crossing my fingers for something amazing!
Nathan Fillion and his colleagues have stated that their upcoming project isn’t a typical fan convention, podcast, or crossover event. This means the original cast of Firefly won’t be appearing as their Firefly characters on The Rookie. Fillion likely understands that fans will be disappointed if all this build-up doesn’t lead to something related to Firefly. So far, Adam Baldwin (who played Jayne) is the only former Serenity crew member who hasn’t appeared in the promotional videos. Sadly, Ron Glass, who played Shepherd Book, passed away ten years ago, and his character also died in the Firefly movie, Serenity.
Let’s consider the possibilities for a Firefly revival. Disney now owns 20th Century Fox Television, the original producer, and they’re already bringing back shows like Buffy and The X-Files on Hulu. So, Firefly seems like a natural fit. While Universal made the Serenity movie, a new limited series or film from Disney feels most likely, and fans would probably welcome either. Another idea could be an animated series, perhaps even in the anime style – though some might argue Cowboy Bebop already covers that ground. An audio drama is possible, but feels less appealing than other options.

Let’s talk about Joss Whedon, the creator of Firefly. Several accusations of mistreatment on set, mostly from the actors on Buffy and Angel, led to the end of his career. He was removed from his HBO show The Nevers in 2020, and the series was quickly canceled. He hasn’t worked on any projects for over five years and has no creative role in the planned Buffy revival, only receiving financial compensation. However, the cast of Firefly has largely remained supportive of him, implying they may have had different experiences. Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk, in particular, are very loyal to Whedon. It raises the question: would they participate in a Firefly revival if he wasn’t involved?
It’s possible Joss Whedon might only be writing for the potential revival, not directing, which would mean limited contact with the cast. However, some fans might still be disappointed. Regardless of the details, the huge reaction to this news shows how much love there still is for Firefly, even 23 years after it ended. It’s rare for a show that only ran for 14 episodes (11 on original TV) to maintain such a dedicated fanbase. If Firefly does come back, it would be fantastic news for science fiction fans, especially now.
