As a lifelong cinephile who has witnessed the evolution of Hollywood, I find Francis Ford Coppola‘s approach to casting for “Megalopolis” both intriguing and slightly controversial. Having followed his career since the iconic “Godfather” trilogy, it’s clear that he possesses a unique vision as a filmmaker, one that often challenges societal norms.
In a recent conversation, director Francis Ford Coppola disclosed that he intentionally chose actors who had faced criticism or controversy (often referred to as “canceled”) for his upcoming film Megalopolis. He stated that he did this to ensure the movie wouldn’t be perceived as a typical “woke” Hollywood production, a term often used to describe films with progressive themes or representations. The highly anticipated film features actors like Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, and Dustin Hoffman, as discussed in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine.
LeBeouf is currently facing a lawsuit filed by former girlfriend and singer-songwriter FKA Twigs over allegations of sexual abuse, while Hoffman was accused of sexual harassment of a 17-year-old intern with whom he worked on the set of 1985’s Death of a Salesman, per Deadline. Voight, meanwhile, is a known supporter of former President Donald Trump, which has been a point of contention between him and his daughter Angelina Jolie, per the publication.
Coppola expressed that he didn’t want the upcoming Lionsgate movie to be labeled as a preachy Hollywood production, instead of being seen as a platform for individuals who have faced cancellations at some point in their lives. He found it intriguing to work with both conservative and progressive personalities on this project.
In this film, titled Megalopolis, I take on the role of an architect striving to construct a utopian city following a devastating event that reduces a New York-like metropolis to rubble. My ambitions make me a foe to the city’s merciless mayor and other vindictive individuals. The purpose of Coppola’s movie is to stimulate dialogue about the reasons behind America’s current division, hoping that it will inspire our nation to overcome those who wish to bring destruction upon us. As shared with Rolling Stone, this is Coppola’s aim.
Since its debut at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, the $120 million film has been embroiled in controversies. Initially, reports about director Coppola kissing extras during a party scene created quite a stir. More recently, another controversy arose when Lionsgate had to remove their newly released trailer from online platforms due to fabricated critic quotes it included.
The movie is scheduled to hit theaters on September 27. Prior to that, it will be shown at the Toronto International Film Festival as well.
The movie’s ensemble is completed by Aubrey Plaza, Dustin Hoffman, Laurence Fishburne, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Giancarlo Esposito.
