‘I Saw How Difficult They Were’: Robert Downey Jr. Credits Tobey Maguire for His Superhero Career

As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for Hollywood dynamics and a deep appreciation for the art of storytelling, I find myself utterly captivated by the latest developments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The return of Robert Downey Jr., the man who brought Iron Man to life, is not just a comeback; it’s a testament to his enduring impact on this multi-billion dollar franchise.

Among the most recognized figures in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the billion-dollar superhero series, is Robert Downey Jr., who has portrayed Iron Man for more than a decade. Following Tony Stark’s death in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, Downey returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Doom for upcoming projects like Avengers: Secret Wars and Avengers: Doomsday.

At the San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel fans were caught off guard when Robert Downey Jr., disguised as Doctor Doom, made an appearance. Interestingly, Tom Holland (Spider-Man: Homecoming actor) attributes a significant portion of Downey’s successful superhero career in Hollywood to none other than Tobey Maguire, the original Spider-Man. The two actors had previously worked together on the movie “Wonder Boys” back in 2000.

In a recent conversation on the Awards Chatter podcast by The Hollywood Reporter, Robert Downey Jr. spoke about Tobey Maguire and shared some insights about the experience of working on a superhero production. He expressed this during the interview, stating…

“As I watched, I realized just how challenging yet potentially gratifying comic book movies were, and how their popularity was growing. After staying clean for a while, my craving returned – an urge to become the best version of myself.”

He also mentioned that he had been intensely working out six days a week without knowing about this role, and his psychologist advised him, “Simply act as if something fantastic is about to occur and prepare yourself for it.”

During the very same interview, the actor known as the Oppenheimer star revealed details about how he ended up reprising his role for Marvel not once but twice. He explained that both Bob Iger, Disney’s CEO, and Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, were the ones who conceived the plan to recast him as the famous antagonist in this manner.

Approximately a year past, Downey shared that he, Feige, and Jon Favreau maintained a friendship. They’re not just colleagues, but good friends. The Avengers actor additionally mentioned his closeness with the Russo brothers, as they have plans for other projects. This circle of collaborators inspired Downey to contemplate suggesting an idea to Bob Iger, which was not connected to the cinematic universe. Instead, it focused on contributing to the parks and location-based endeavors.

During a chat with Kevin Feige, Robert Downey Jr.’s wife Susan was there when Feige hinted at the idea of Downey potentially coming back. Susan inquired, “Coming back as what exactly?” Emphasizing the necessity to portray Doctor Doom’s character faithfully, Feige sparked more discussion between Downey and Bob Iger, with Downey expressing a desire to speak with Iger about it, saying, “Can I have a word with Bob Iger?” Feige asked, “On what topic?” to which Downey replied, “Everything.” Translated: In a talk with Kevin Feige, Robert Downey Jr.’s wife Susan was present when Feige mentioned the possibility of Downey reappearing. Susan wanted to know, “What exactly would that be as?” Stressing the importance of accurately portraying Doctor Doom’s character, Feige prompted further conversation between Downey and Bob Iger, with Downey expressing a wish to talk to Iger about it, saying, “Can I speak with Bob Iger?” Feige asked, “On what matter?” to which Downey replied, “Everything.”

The upcoming Avengers movie titled “Avengers: Doomsday” seems to indicate a prominent part for Doctor Doom. But, it’s still unclear how he will debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and eventually transform into the powerful villain who brings destruction in Doomsday.

There are whispers that Doctor Doom might make his entrance in the extra scenes of the Fantastic Four film, allegedly wiping out the Council of Kangs in the process. This act could mark the conclusion of Jonathan Majors’ character as the principal adversary, paving the way for Doctor Doom to assume the role of the primary antagonist in the MCU moving forward.
