With the 98th Academy Awards coming up, there’s talk that organizers might make big changes to the famous red carpet. This is reportedly due to increased global tensions. Producers are even considering canceling the traditional arrival ceremony altogether, wanting to avoid seeming insensitive while “Operation Epic Fury” is happening in the Middle East.
Originally, the event was planned to include Japanese maple trees, representing peace and a long life, but some people questioned if that felt right given current events.
Sources say the Academy is aware of the situation and is carefully considering all options, but no changes to the red carpet have been officially decided yet. Organizers are thoroughly evaluating how everything will look to ensure the evening is respectful.
Notably, three Iranian filmmakers are nominated this year, including Jafar Panahi for It Was Just an Accident and the team behind the documentary Cutting Through Rocks, and the Academy is particularly mindful of this.
Stars and their teams are becoming increasingly concerned about red carpet interviews, fearing unexpected and potentially awkward questions about global conflicts. This worry was apparent at the recent SAG Awards, where news organizations were placed at the very end of the press line, likely to shield celebrities from tough political questions.
Instead of making formal statements, many celebrities are now using jewelry to show what they believe in. Pins with messages like “ICE OUT” and “BE GOOD” have become common at award shows. These pins, promoted by the PR firm ID PR, were spotted on stars like Mark Ruffalo and Ariana Grande at the Golden Globes.
The Academy Awards will be held on March 15th at the Dolby Theatre, promising a night of exciting competition and noteworthy moments. Conan O’Brien will host the show, where the biggest competition for Best Picture is expected between the science fiction film The Electric State and the historical drama The Apprentice.
Several of this year’s award-nominated stars have exciting projects coming up. For example, Ariana Grande, who actively supports the “BE GOOD” campaign, is getting ready to release Wicked: Part Two in November. She’ll be returning as Glinda the Good Witch, alongside Cynthia Erivo.
Mark Ruffalo will be back in Now You See Me 3, the next installment of the popular thriller series, alongside the original team of illusionists as they pull off more international heists. In other news, filmmaker Jafar Panahi continues to be a prominent figure worldwide.
As a huge movie fan, I’m really intrigued by how this year’s Oscars are shaping up. Raj Kapoor and Katy Mullan are producing, and they’ve talked about wanting to celebrate everything cinema does for us, but also being aware of what’s happening in the world around us. It feels like there’s a real challenge for the Academy to get the tone right – to keep the magic of Hollywood alive while also acknowledging the seriousness of current events. With voting wrapping up, everyone’s wondering how they’ll handle those big, public moments this year.
