Quentin Tarantino Partially Blames Alec Baldwin For Rust Shooting Death Of Halyna Hutchins

Movie director Quentin Tarantino has made assertions that stirred debate regarding the 2021 incident on the set of Rust. He suggests that while Alec Baldwin may not be entirely accountable for the demise of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, there’s no doubt he bears some responsibility in the tragedy.

In a recent episode of Bill Maher’s Club Random podcast on August 25, the director had a discussion with Maher. During this conversation, Bill criticized the prosecutors handling Baldwin’s case as worthless. However, Tarantino offered a slightly contrasting perspective, asserting that the armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, was primarily responsible for 90% of the tragedy, but also emphasized that the actor and producer bore some responsibility for using the weapon without verifying its safety. Tarantino emphasized that actors should always inspect their weapons to make sure there are no bullets in the chamber or any other issues with the prop weapon before using it in a scene.

It’s important to mention that the union, SAG-AFTRA, which stands for Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, representing acting professionals, has previously expressed disagreement with the idea that actors should be responsible for checking the safety of weapons used on set. This stance contrasts with Quentin Tarantino’s views in this context.

Previously, Baldwin was charged with involuntary manslaughter, which could have sent him to jail for 18 months. However, Judge Marlowe Sommer of New Mexico dismissed this charge in July. It was found out that the prosecutors failed to share important evidence with Baldwin’s lawyers. Overjoyed by the news, Baldwin cried tears of joy in court. Later on, according to TMZ, he filed a lawsuit against Special Prosecutor Kari Morrissey and Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza.

In April, Gutierrez-Reed was given an 18-month prison sentence due to her involvement in the accident. The judge, Sommer, deemed her responsible for converting a harmless weapon into something deadly. However, during her sentencing, she described herself as “young and inexperienced” and accused the media of painting her as a “true villain.” She argued in court that she had been overwhelmed with work and lacked necessary resources while working on the film.

According to Deadline, Judge Sommer expressed skepticism and pointed out that Gutierrez- Reed was unwilling to accept responsibility and instead shifted blame for the live ammunition incident onto others rather than herself.
