A short preview for HBO’s new superhero series, Lanterns, is out now! The full trailer will be released tomorrow. Based on the popular DC Comics characters Green Lantern (Hal Jordan and John Stewart), the show looks set to deliver a thrilling combination of mystery, action, and adventures across the galaxy.
Okay, so I just got a sneak peek at Lanterns, the newest series coming out of the DC Universe, and it’s looking really interesting. Created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, it centers around two Green Lanterns teaming up to solve a murder right here on Earth. It’s a DC Studios and Warner Bros. Television production, and Chris Mundy is heading things up as showrunner. Definitely one to watch for fans of the DCU!
Kyle Chandler plays Hal Jordan, a seasoned Green Lantern nearing the end of his career, who begins mentoring new recruit John Stewart, portrayed by Aaron Pierre. Pierre’s character is unique, blending his military background with a creative personality. The filmmakers say this adds complexity to Stewart. Chandler modeled his performance on test pilot Chuck Yeager, resulting in a Hal Jordan who is both funny and confidently composed.

Kelly Macdonald stars as Sheriff Kerry, and Nathan Fillion plays Guy Gardner, a more anxious take on the popular Green Lantern character first seen in the 2025 film, Superman. The cast also includes Ulrich Thomsen as the villainous Sinestro, Garret Dillahunt as cowboy William Macon, and Nicole Ari Parker as John Stewart’s mother, Bernadette. Laura Linney and Paula Patton round out the ensemble in currently unrevealed roles.
The Lanterns series first began development with Greg Berlanti in 2019. However, after James Gunn and Peter Safran became heads of DC Studios in 2022, the show was reworked. It’s designed to feel like detective shows such as True Detective and Slow Horses, combining superhero action with a mystery storyline.
The first two episodes of the series were directed by James Hawes, who also directed Slow Horses. Other episodes were helmed by Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov. Filming for the show occurred in Los Angeles between February and July 2025.
This eight-episode series is one of the first shows planned for the new DCU, kicking off its ‘Chapter One: Gods and Monsters’ lineup in mid-2026. Set in Nebraska, the story follows the Green Lanterns as their investigation reveals unsettling secrets, blending realistic drama with a cosmic scope.
This short preview offers fans a taste of the show’s dark and intricate atmosphere, and the complete trailer coming out tomorrow will show even more of the exciting story and thrilling action.
