Seth MacFarlane Says THE ORVILLE Season 4 Scripts Done

Fans have been waiting over four years for a new season of Seth MacFarlane’s sci-fi comedy, The Orville, and many thought it was canceled. However, MacFarlane recently confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that the show is still happening! Scripts for a 10-episode fourth season are already written – he just needs to find time in his schedule to film it. The Orville originally aired on Fox in 2017 before moving to Hulu for its third season in 2022. While MacFarlane had previously suggested the show might return, his recent comments to THR at the premiere of Ted season 2 were much more definitive. Here’s what he said:

To be upfront, the scripts for season four are already finished – all ten of them. The only thing holding us back is finding the time to film it. It’s really down to my schedule and when I can dedicate a year to the project, considering everything else we’re working on. But once we get started, we can move quickly.

Despite the initial contracts covering just three seasons, the main actors are all planning to come back. Seth MacFarlane not only created the show but also played Captain Ed Mercer. The cast also included Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes, Jessica Szohr, and Anne Winters. While the show is expensive to make, MacFarlane has pointed out that its budget is comparable to many other streaming series.

When Star Trek: Discovery first aired, many longtime Star Trek fans actually preferred The Orville, which deliberately poked fun at classic sci-fi themes with a comedic approach. Despite being a comedy, The Orville gained a loyal fanbase eager for its return. Now it appears the show will be back – the only question is when. Considering Seth MacFarlane’s Family Guy once had a three-year break before returning successfully, fans are optimistic that The Orville will follow a similar path.
