HBO is developing a new movie set in the world of Game of Thrones. Beau Willimon, known for House of Cards, will be writing the screenplay.
The upcoming project is said to tell the story of King Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros, and it’s planned as a large-scale film, similar in scope to Dune.
Aegon’s Conquest Heads to the Big Screen
HBO is creating a major movie event about Aegon I Targaryen, the famous ruler who united the Seven Kingdoms.
Aegon’s conquest is a hugely important event in the history of Westeros, happening around 300 years before the story of Game of Thrones begins.
The story follows Aegon and his sisters, Visenya and Rhaenys, as they conquer Westeros with their dragons and begin the Targaryen rule.
This is different from the new TV series based on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which features “Egg” as a nickname for Aegon V Targaryen, a king who ruled much later in the Targaryen dynasty.
The project is planned to be as large and ambitious as the movie Dune, suggesting a huge production filled with impressive visual effects and large-scale battles.
Beau Willimon Takes the Reins
Willimon is best known for his work on Andor and House of Cards.
Having followed this director’s work, especially his knack for political thrillers and realistic characters, I have a strong feeling this movie will really dig into the nitty-gritty of how Aegon came to power. Expect lots of maneuvering, shifting loyalties, and, frankly, backstabbing – it seems like that’s where the story’s heart truly lies.
A movie focused on Aegon would be the first time the series moves to the big screen after previously existing as a television-only property.
A Long-Discussed Idea Finally Moves Forward
The idea of making a Game of Thrones movie isn’t recent. Back in 2013, the original creators of the show, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, apparently proposed finishing the story with three movies, modeled after films like The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and its follow-ups.
Despite the idea, AT&T, which owned HBO at the time, apparently turned it down. The show eventually ended in 2019 after airing on HBO.
With the Game of Thrones universe growing through shows like House of the Dragon and more spin-offs planned, now seems like the perfect time to bring a new story to the big screen.
Ellison’s Praise for Thrones
I recently heard David Ellison talking about his favorite HBO show, and he said it was Game of Thrones. It really seems like HBO is still a big focus for the company, and that comment just adds to that feeling.
Because the series remains incredibly popular worldwide, a movie version of Aegon’s conquest could be HBO’s biggest and most daring project to date.
If approved, the movie would retell a beloved story from the world of Westeros and represent a significant shift for the franchise, moving it from a popular TV series to a large-scale cinematic experience.
