Christina Applegate recounts a memorable night from her teenage years in her new memoir, You With the Sad Eyes. She shares how, at the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards, she unexpectedly left Brad Pitt – whom she’d brought as her date – to be with Sebastian Bach, the lead singer of the band Skid Row.
When Applegate was 17, she was very well-known for her role on Married… with Children. She’d invited Brad Pitt, who was just starting to become famous, to an awards show in Los Angeles as a friend – not a date.
She recalls feeling “incredible” in her Ceil Chapman gown, but surprisingly, her focus shifted during the evening. As she explains, she felt so confident and empowered that after the awards show, she ended up leaving with Sebastian Bach instead of Brad Pitt.
Applegate confessed she’d spent the entire evening watching Brad Pitt, who was 57 at the time. She also pointed out that Pitt, now 62, hadn’t yet become the famous actor he would be after the 1991 film Thelma & Louise. Her choice meant Pitt was left to quietly drive her mother and a friend home, and she remembers he was understandably furious with her afterward. They didn’t speak for years, but eventually, they both agreed she was young and immature, and while he deserved better treatment, it was time to forgive her for choosing the lead singer of Skid Row over him.
Applegate has spoken about this well-known night before. Back in 2015, while on Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live, she playfully resisted revealing the man’s identity, asking how much she’d be compensated for sharing. She eventually confirmed he was a famous person, but not an actor, and clarified that she and Brad Pitt didn’t become a couple after that encounter.
In her new memoir, You With the Sad Eyes, actress Patricia Arquette (formerly Applegate) shares a personal look at her life, including a story about a difficult experience she had while filming a movie. She also reflects on her childhood, past relationships where she was abused, becoming a mother, and her health struggles with breast cancer and multiple sclerosis. Married to musician Martyn LeNoble, 56, Arquette explained to PEOPLE that everyone carries their past with them, and it’s how you deal with it that matters. While she doesn’t intend the book to be purely inspirational, she hopes it might inspire others.
