Now, listen closely. While the grown-ups were flapping about today, all bothered by squabbles in the Middle East and oil prices doing a jig, something rather peculiar happened with Plug Power. The shares, you see, shot upwards like a startled jackrabbit – a good 24% leap as of late morning. Quite a sight, really.
The reason? Well, they’d been showing off their report card for the last bit of the year, and announcing a new head honcho. A change at the top, you understand, is often like swapping a grumpy badger for a slightly less grumpy badger. We shall see.
A Bit Better Than Expected, Perhaps
Plug Power confessed to losing a mere 6 cents per share, on sales of $225.2 million. The clever clogs at FactSet had predicted a loss of 10 cents on $217 million. So, not a disaster, you see. The stock, which had been looking rather peaky for the last three months, perked up a bit. Though, let’s not get carried away. It’s still a bit like polishing a rather tarnished penny.
And so, a new captain takes the helm – a fellow named Jose Luis Crespo. He arrives at a rather tricky time, you see. Plug Power is promising something called “positive EBITDA” by the end of the year – a sort of magical accounting trick where they pretend to be making money before actually having any. He also whispers promises of “positive operating income” by 2027, and full-blown profitability by 2028. Sounds like a very long time to wait for a miracle, doesn’t it?
These targets, my friends, are lines drawn in the sand. And rather wobbly ones at that. Plug Power ended 2025 with a paltry $368.5 million in the bank, after burning through $535.8 million just keeping the lights on. They’ll need to beg, borrow, or… well, you get the picture. Any slip-up, any delay, and this whole house of cards could come tumbling down. Investors should be very careful. This isn’t a rocket ship; it’s a rather fragile balloon filled with hopeful air. And balloons, as we all know, have a habit of popping.
