As a devoted admirer of Brian Cox‘s illustrious career spanning over six decades, I find his candid insights into the current state of cinema truly enlightening. Having grown up in Scotland, where the silver screen was as much a part of my life as the streets of Dundee, I can resonate with his nostalgia for the golden age of cinematography.
Actor Brian Cox from Succession candidly discusses the current state of cinema, expressing his view that Marvel movies contribute significantly to its decline, during a talk at the Edinburgh Film Festival. When questioned about the growing popularity of commercial films and TV series, both among viewers and critics, he voiced his opinions on this trend.
Cox, unfiltered, revealed that it looks at the current scenario of cinema as “party time,” especially after the MCU-produced Deadpool & Wolverine was declared a hit at the box office.
During the Q&A session at the event, the seasoned actor shared his thoughts, stating, “It seems that television has taken over some aspects that movies once held.” He further explained, “I believe cinema is facing significant challenges due to the dominance of franchises like Marvel and DC. This oversized focus might be causing its downfall, and I fear it’s starting to unravel a bit. The storylines are becoming less coherent as a result.”
Later in the conversation, Cox pointed out that teaming up Deadpool and Wolverine resulted in substantial profits for the studios and satisfied fans. However, he noted that the quality of the content may have been compromised. Interestingly, the actor was a significant cast member in X-Men, alongside Hugh Jackman donning his iconic yellow suit.
At the panel gathering, Cox playfully remarked, “Deadpool encounters an old character… or should I say, Wolverine, who I concocted yet somehow can’t remember. In truth, whenever these movies air, a small piece of me [as Stryker] emerges, and they never seem to compensate me for it.”
I exclaimed, “It seems like some actors are having a blast with these roles! I mean, Hugh Jackman has so much more to offer, not to mention Ryan Reynolds. It’s their choice to tread that path, and it’s a hit at the box office – they rake in the cash. Who am I to criticize?”
Moving to TV broadcasts, Cox expounded on the content suited for smaller screens, grasping their productions thoroughly, and serving up top-tier shows. The seasoned actor provided instances from his series, such as Succession, and Ripley featuring Andrew Scott, showcasing excellence.
Actor Troy, speaking candidly, mentioned, “With so many shows available, it’s an honor to narrate a story across a span of time.” Additionally, Cox spoke about his childhood aspiration to become an actor. The star of Braveheart hails from Dundee, a city in Scotland. He divulged that there were 21 theaters in his locality, and he frequented each one from the age of 6 to 8.
Brian Cox is well-known for portraying memorable roles in films such as The Escapist, The Carer, and Nuremberg, plus numerous other significant characters.
