On the Fly on the Wall podcast featuring David Spade and Dana Carvey from SNL, Johnson candidly discussed the motives behind her exit from the legendary sketch comedy program. This move comes after numerous years of participation that started back in 2020 within the long-standing series.

In the heart of SNL’s Season 49, I found myself grappling with doubts about my fit in the team. Opening up about these feelings, I confided in my colleagues, “To be honest, I sometimes question if this is the right place for me, so perhaps it might be best for me to step back.” Yet, amidst these reservations, I chose to press on with the season. However, I must confess that before Season 49 even began, I was seriously considering stepping away from the show.

Johnson was uncertain since she believed she didn’t quite mesh with SNL. She disclosed that she informed them rather late, only after she learned about the opportunity herself. This discussion suggested a near-decision to depart on her part, while also underscoring her doubts concerning the timing and future career moves.

Regardless of her initial reservations, Johnson began Season 49 with optimism. The opening phase of the season turned out to be particularly fruitful for her, causing her to rethink her original stance. She admitted that during the first fortnight, everything went wonderfully well.

Johnson made a notable appearance in several sketches during the early part of the season, which represented a considerable upgrade from her typical involvement. She expressed that she received approximately three to four sketches during the first half of the season, whereas usually she only gets about two or three for the entire season. Consequently, she felt like she was excelling in her performances.

At first, Johnson felt like she belonged, thanks to her initial success. However, this feeling didn’t persist for very long. Even though the beginning was promising, she soon started doubting whether she truly fit in with the show.

Ben Silva, who served as Johnson’s scriptwriter, departed from the show, signifying a significant shift. Silva played a crucial role in assisting Johnson in adapting her concepts for the Saturday Night Live (SNL) format, which was challenging for her given her background as a stand-up comedian. In her own words, if she shared an idea with him, he knew exactly how to reformat it for SNL, whereas finding the right format herself was the tough part.

In my own words, I’d say: I found it incredibly challenging to adjust my comedic flair to suit Saturday Night Live’s unique demands without the guidance of Silva. This struggle only fueled my doubts about whether I truly deserved a spot on that legendary stage. There were moments when I felt like an imposter, as if SNL was meant for someone else entirely. Acknowledging this, I admitted, “That show is for a different kind of performer.”
