In the series, Dearden plays Dr. Melissa “Mel” King, a talented but socially awkward emergency medicine resident. Taylor Cranston, born Taylor Dearden Cranston, has intentionally built her career independently. After earning her degree from the University of Southern California in 2015, she decided to use her mother’s family name, Dearden, professionally, rather than her well-known father’s surname.
