Planet Labs: A Fleeting Glimpse of Profit

Planet Labs (PL +8.24%) experienced a momentary lift this Monday, a small bloom in a generally overcast field. Eight and a half percent. It’s always the percentages, isn’t it? The numbers we cling to, attempting to chart a course through the inevitable drift.

News, of course, arrived with the weekend. A disturbance in the already troubled waters of the world. Most, I suspect, were occupied with the immediate spectacle, the flickering images on their screens. But for those seeking a broader view, a detached observation, Planet Labs, with its constellation of orbiting eyes, offered a different kind of picture. A clear, digital rendering of events unfolding on the ground. One wonders if the generals truly see more than the rest of us, or simply a more organized arrangement of the same anxieties.

A Change in the Heavens

There was a time, not so long ago, when Planet Labs spoke of a higher purpose. A “public benefit corporation,” they called themselves. They promised to monitor the slow, relentless creep of global warming, to assist in the fight against wildfires, to generally “do good.” Laudable, certainly. But a business, ultimately, must also be a business. And good intentions, like summer rain, rarely fill the coffers.

The shift, it seems, has been towards more pragmatic pursuits. Defense and security contracts. A more reliable source of income, if a less romantic one. It places Planet Labs in a peculiar position, doesn’t it? Providing clarity amidst chaos, profiting, perhaps, from the misfortunes of others. A small irony, easily missed.

Profitability remains a distant shore, a mirage shimmering on the horizon. They generated forty million in free cash flow last year, a respectable sum, though hardly a fortune. The price, however, is…ambitious. Two hundred and five times FCF. One wonders if the market is valuing potential, or simply indulging in a collective daydream. A dividend, naturally, is not yet on the table. Not for a company still reaching for solvency.

Still, there is a certain…potential. A glimmer of something real beneath the layers of speculation. But the market, like life, rarely offers guarantees. It’s a slow, relentless accumulation of small gains and inevitable losses. And the satellites, of course, continue to circle, recording it all with detached, unwavering precision. A beautiful, melancholy sight.
