Now, Circle Internet Group (CRCL +12.52%), purveyors of the positively spiffing USD Coin (USDC +0.00%), did recently venture into the public market, appearing last June at a mere thirty-one dollars a share. A rather modest sum, one might think, considering its current valuation, which has climbed to something approaching ninety-four dollars. The question, naturally, is this: could a ten-thousand-dollar punt on this particular fintech fancy transform into a million over the next few decades? A dashedly ambitious proposition, certainly, but not entirely beyond the realms of possibility, as we shall see.
How Does Circle Manage to Keep the Show on the Road?
The USD Coin, you see, is a cryptocurrency pegged to the good old U.S. dollar, and is proving rather useful for settling cross-border transactions with a speed and economy that would make the old interbank system positively blush. It’s also a boon for those in countries experiencing a spot of financial bother – hyperinflation, currency wobbles, geopolitical unpleasantness – allowing them to safeguard their savings without actually having to get their hands on physical dollars, which, let’s be honest, can be a bit of a bother.
Like other stablecoins, one can ‘stake’ USD Coin on various exchanges – centralized or those of the more decentralized persuasion – and earn yields that leave the returns on your average savings account looking rather paltry. But here’s the clever bit: unlike many of its rivals, which rely on a somewhat murky collection of other cryptocurrencies or assets to maintain its peg, USD Coin is backed directly by cold, hard cash and U.S. Treasuries, held by perfectly respectable custodians. Furthermore, Circle, and Circle alone, possesses the power to mint these digital denominations. A rather tidy arrangement, wouldn’t you say?
Now, this centralized approach may not appeal to those with a penchant for the utterly decentralized and a distrust of government regulators (a rather eccentric bunch, if you ask me). However, it proves a perfect fit for companies like Visa (V +0.01%) and Intuit (INTU +3.53%), who have recently integrated USD Coin into their systems to expedite their financial dealings. A thoroughly sensible move, one feels.
The bulk of Circle’s revenue, you see, stems from its reserve interest income – the interest it earns on the bank deposits and short-term Treasuries held in its coffers. A smaller, but steadily growing, portion comes from transaction fees – a small charge for routing payments through its blockchain – and subscription fees from businesses that have tethered their platforms to its ecosystem via APIs, wallets, and other such modern conveniences.
Could Circle Generate a Fortune? A Million, Perhaps?
Analysts, those learned fellows, anticipate Circle’s revenue to increase at a rather brisk 25% CAGR from 2025 to 2027. They also expect the company to turn a profit this year, and to see EPS grow by a remarkable 69% in 2027. Quite a performance, wouldn’t you agree?
This robust growth should be supported by the increasing demand for its stablecoins. To meet this demand, Circle will, naturally, increase its reserves to mint more USD Coins, thereby boosting its reserve interest income. Its other fees should also rise as it secures more financial partners. A perfectly logical progression of events.
This all sounds rather promising, but one must be cautious. Circle’s stock isn’t exactly cheap at 84 times this year’s earnings. If it continues to meet analysts’ estimates through 2027, maintains a 25% CAGR for the following nine years, and trades at a more sustainable (though still rather extravagant) 50 times forward earnings, its stock could rise more than sixfold over the next decade. A solid return, to be sure, but unlikely to transform a ten-thousand-dollar investment into a million. One might achieve a comfortable sum, enough for a decent holiday, perhaps, but a million? That, I fear, would require a touch more luck, and a rather larger initial stake. Still, a most interesting company, and one worth keeping a watchful eye upon.
