As a dedicated follower of the Joker franchise, I must say I was utterly thrilled when I heard the news about Joker: Folie à Deux. The idea of Joaquin Phoenix performing live on Broadway as the Joker was a tantalizing prospect, one that had me on the edge of my seat in eager anticipation.
As the release date for “Joker: Folie à Deux” approaches and fans eagerly await it, the director of the film has divulged fresh details regarding the upcoming sequel. Todd Phillips, the filmmaker, revealed to the audience that the original concept for the movie deviated significantly from its final cut, which is set to be unveiled soon on screens.
During a chat with Variety, the director expressed that he and Joaquin Phoenix had discussed the possibility of Phoenix performing in a live Broadway musical as part of their plans. Simultaneously, the actor himself participated in the discussion, adding his thoughts to the previously proposed concepts regarding the film.
Additionally, Phoenix revealed that he proposed the initial concept for a Broadway show to Phillips following the actor’s Academy Award victory for playing Arthur Fleck in the 2019 movie, “Joker.”
In conversation with the media outlet, I shared that Todd had been whispering advice to me from backstage via an earpiece. Excitedly, I reached out to him early that day, expressing my desire for us to collaborate on a project together.
Additionally, Phillips mentioned his thoughts on heading to Broadway, but ultimately discarded the notion when considering the potential longer-than-anticipated preparation time for the show.
The director expressed, “Upon deeper consideration, we found out that a project of this scale requires approximately four years to complete. Additionally, we wondered if Joaquin would be willing to dedicate six months from his life for it every night on stage.” He also added, “We then considered presenting it at the Carlyle as a more intimate production. However, COVID-19 intervened.”
1. The cast and crew bypassed the Broadway plans, but they did establish a base for the musical’s development.
The storyline can be summarized as follows: “Arthur Fleck, once an unsuccessful comedian, encounters his soulmate, Harley Quinn, during his stay at Arkham State Hospital. Upon being discharged, they embark on a tragic love journey.”
Joker: Folie à Deux is set to hit theaters on October 4.
