As someone who was a mere teenager during the Y2K scare, the anticipation and fear that surrounded it have always intrigued me. The trailer for “Y2K” has brought back those memories of stockpiling supplies and preparing for the worst, only to find out that the world kept spinning as usual. Yet, I can’t help but wonder if things would have been different had Y2K actually happened.
Individuals who had reached double digits in age by the year 1999 likely recall the widespread anxiety of Y2K. The concern was that the world would experience an unprecedented technological collapse due to computers failing to recognize the “00” at the end of 2000. As I turned thirteen during that year, my mother prepared us by keeping us all in the living room with emergency supplies like flashlights, just in case disaster struck. Fortunately, it did not come to pass… However, I often ponder what might have transpired had Y2K unfolded as predicted. A24 offers a comical yet unsettling response to this question in the trailer for Y2K, a film that takes us from celebrating the end of the millennium to chaos and destruction.
In the video, we encounter two teenage boys attempting an undercover entry into a trendy New Year’s Eve party in 1999. Their goal is straightforward: one of them aims to kiss a beautiful girl named Laura at midnight. However, this turns out to be the least of their concerns when the lights go out and the Y2K event truly unfolds. The technology malfunctions, leading to fatalities, such as a Tamagotchi piercing through a girl’s skull. Ugh. The technological catastrophe eventually collapses society, leaving the kids to struggle for survival. I find this fascinating. There aren’t many films that capture early 2000s culture, let alone ones depicting a dial-up disaster scenario.
Instead of “And what better song for the Y2K trailer than ‘Tubthumping’ by Chumbawamba?”, you could say: “What other fitting tune for the Y2K trailer could there be than ‘Tubthumping’ by Chumbawamba? This song was everywhere back then, much like how these characters can’t seem to escape the threat of technology gone awry.”
