As a devoted fan who’s grown up with Matthew Perry’s charming portrayal of Chandler Bing, last week’s revelations about his tragic demise have struck a chord deep within my heart. I can’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of sadness and anger, knowing that the talented actor was surrounded by enablers instead of those who truly cared for him.
His closest friends are experiencing a resurgence of emotions following last week’s arrests related to Matthew Perry’s fatal drug overdose.
On August 15, five people were accused by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for their involvement in the death of actor Perry: two doctors, a woman known as the “Ketamine Queen”, an alleged drug supplier, and Perry’s personal assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa. According to the plea agreement with the Department of Justice, Perry’s personal assistant admitted that hours before his death, Perry asked him to administer a large dose of something to him.
Last year, it was Iwamasa who was the first on the scene when Perry’s body was found lifeless, and he was also the initial individual to communicate with the authorities about the incident.
As a devoted friend of Perry, the recent arrests have deeply touched me, reflecting on personal conversations I’ve had. “I truly believe Matthew had genuine friends who cherished and supported him. If only we could have been there for him when he needed us most.”
“It makes them sad that he was surrounded by enablers,” the source added.
Last week, as I announced the charges against these defendants, U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada made it clear that these offenders had taken advantage of Perry’s well-known struggles with drugs to amass wealth for themselves. In essence, they were playing a dangerous game, risking lives in the process. This case, along with many others we’re pursuing related to drug trafficking, serves as a strong warning to anyone engaging in such harmful activities.
Perry, known for his role on the popular NBC sitcom and films such as Fools Rush In, The Whole Nine Yards, and Three to Tango, has openly discussed his struggle with addiction. He revealed in a publication last September 2022 that he’s been mostly sober since 2001, but has had approximately 60 or 70 relapses over the years.
Per the DOJ, Perry relapsed again in the months before his death.
On what would’ve been Matthew Perry’s 55th birthday on August 19th, his absence was deeply felt. Known for his role in Friends, Perry sadly passed away in October 2023. He was discovered face-down in his hot tub on the 28th of that month. Medical experts attributed his death to the immediate effects of ketamine, a controlled anesthetic substance.
If you’re aware that someone is battling substance addiction, don’t hesitate to contact the relevant authorities about it. You can find numerous hotlines ready to assist in such situations.
