X-MEN ’97 Season 2 Will Feature 2 Other Marvel Mutant Teams

As a lifelong X-Men fan who’s witnessed the rise and fall of more X-teams than I care to count, the news about X-Men ’97 season two bringing not one but two additional X-teams into the fray has me positively thrilled! It’s like Christmas came early and brought a whole bag full of mutant goodies.

It’s well-known among X-Men enthusiasts that the universe of Marvel Comics is home to numerous X-Men spin-off teams, some of which are nearly as legendary as the original group based at Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. In the upcoming season two of X-Men ’97, it appears we’ll witness at least a couple of these other X-teams in action, according to Brad Winderbaum from Marvel Animation. This revelation, shared during a Q&A screening of season one in Los Angeles, has fans of Marvel’s mutants buzzing with anticipation.

In Marvel’s universe, there are multiple teams whose names begin with “X” followed by a dash. Let me express it another way… There are actually two more X-teams that appear in Season 2.

Winderbaum didn’t disclose which teams these were, but during the Marvel Animation panel at D23, Lorna Dane (Polaris) and Alex Summers (Havok) appeared in the footage. Both characters are former members of X-Factor, a government-backed mutant team that starred in the animated series “X-Men: The Animated Series.” In the episode “Cold Comfort,” X-Factor was led by the mutant Forge. With Forge putting together a new X-Men squad following their disappearance at the end of last season, it’s possible he could call upon his old team for assistance. Notably, Forge had a picture of them on his wall in “X-Men ’97,” so they seem like strong candidates for at least one new X-team.

Speaking of the other teams, it’s plausible that with Jubilee and Sunspot still around, someone like Emma Frost might establish a new school for mutant teenagers. She could potentially assume the role of headmaster at Xavier’s School. This could be an opportune moment to introduce the New Mutants or Generation X (or perhaps both), as well as X-Force – the paramilitary group led by Cable. It seems likely that we haven’t seen the last of Nathan Summers, and when he returns, he might bring associates along. Of course, teams like Excalibur, X-Statix, and the Exiles are also possibilities. We’ll find out for certain when the second season of X-Men ’97 arrives on Disney+, hopefully in 2025.
