Breaking Down ALIEN: ROMULUS’ Major Deaths

As a seasoned horror movie enthusiast, I must say that the characters in this latest installment of the Alien franchise certainly face some gruesome fates. The poor souls aboard the Romulus are no exception to this rule.

Over four and a half decades of the Alien series, it’s common for the movies to start with a significant number of characters, but by the end, only a few remain (often just one). For instance, only Ellen Ripley and her cat Jones made it through the Nostromo in Alien, while Aliens saw the survival of Ellen Ripley, Newt, and Bishop, although Hicks died later. Now, some argue that three characters who died between the second and third movies shouldn’t be counted because they were technically dead before the next movie started. (We’re still not over that, to be honest). To put it simply, encounters with the Xenomorph usually don’t end well for the human characters. And Alien: Romulus follows this trend, as this article will reveal the death toll in the latest installment and who made it to the final scene.

The Victims

Navarro (Aileen Wu)

In an unfortunate turn of events aboard the spaceship Corbelan, the team inadvertently revives a species of menacing aliens known as facehuggers. Eager to find a host, these creatures quickly zeroed in on Navarro, the ship’s pilot and cargo handler. In keeping with the chilling Alien series tradition, once the facehugger implanted its eggs, the resulting offspring burst out of Navarro’s chest, making a hasty escape. Farewell, Navarro. You appeared to be the most charismatic member of the crew. Unfortunately, it was your turn to set sail first.

Bjorn (Spike Fearn)

As a die-hard fan, I’ve got to say that Navarro’s partner Bjorn had an incredibly thick Cockney accent that often left us guessing what he was saying. However, we weren’t exactly fond of him to begin with – he just came across as a bit of a bully. Frankly, it’s hard to like someone who treats the charming android Andy (David Jonsson) so poorly. Regardless, Bjorn unfortunately stumbles upon the developing Xenomorph and meets an untimely end when its corrosive blood splatters all over him. Even he didn’t deserve such a gruesome demise.

Tyler (Archie Renaux)

Tyler is marked for death by the Romulus creature. When his sister Kay (Isabela Merced) is captured by the Xenomorph, Tyler attempts to rescue her. Later, Rain (Cailee Spaeny) discovers Kay alive, but then the Xenomorph attacks Rain. In an effort to protect Rain, Tyler steps in front of the attack and receives a fatal wound from the creature’s tail. He doesn’t die immediately and is carried off by the Xenomorph into its lair, where it inflicts further damage upon him with one of its appendages, striking his head.

Kay (Isabela Merced)

Poor Kay found herself in a dismal predicament. She conceived by an individual she had no affection for on the distant planet Jackson’s Star, and made the decision to flee that wretched place. Her fate took a grim turn when she met a gruesome demise on Romulus. After miraculously surviving an Xenomorph assault, she elected to undergo risky experiments with the Prometheus formula, hoping it would boost her chances of survival. Tragically, this altered her DNA and led to the birth of a monstrous hybrid offspring – part human, part Engineer, part Xenomorph. To make matters worse, this grotesque creature drained its mother’s blood, ultimately taking her life. In most horror films, pregnant women, children, and pets are spared such misfortune. But in this chilling tale, even those sanctuaries were breached.

Rook (Ian Holm/Daniel Betts)

Rook is a lab technician on the space station Romulus, a synthetic manufactured by Weyland-Yutani, similar to Ash from Alien. He survived being split in half by an alien creature but eventually meets his end when the space station is destroyed by debris from Jackson’s Star’s rings. Given that he was the film’s primary antagonist, some might argue he deserved a more gruesome demise.

The Survivors

Rain (Cailee Spaeny) and Andy (David Jonsson)

With only two left alive, Rain and her synthetic brother Andy board the ship named Corbelan for an escape. The Xenomorph inflicts severe wounds on Andy, yet he stubbornly persists in his synthetic existence. Managing to flee after obliterating the grotesque hybrid progeny of the Kay and entering cryo-pods, they dream of a more favorable future. However, considering this franchise’s history, we can’t help but suspect that their awakening won’t bring them any comfort.
