It’s always a little strange seeing actors change over the years. Hollywood can be tough on people, and when you add in the physical toll of acting, especially if they really immerse themselves in their roles, it really shows. Some actors seem to stay the same, but others… well, they change so much you almost don’t recognize them! Life happens, of course – health issues, big personal shifts – and it definitely impacts how they look. It’s a good reminder that these are real people behind those iconic characters, and they age and change just like everyone else.
Mickey Rourke

Mickey Rourke dramatically changed his appearance after taking time off from acting to become a boxer in the 1990s. He suffered facial injuries while boxing that required several surgeries, making him look very different from his early roles, like the one in ‘9 1/2 Weeks’. Rourke’s career was later revitalized by the critically praised film ‘The Wrestler’, where his rugged appearance was ideal for the part. Today, he continues to act in independent films, looking much older than his former ‘Hollywood heartthrob’ days.
Brendan Fraser

Brendan Fraser became a global star in the late 1990s with ‘The Mummy’ movies, known for his fit and active role. Doing his own stunts for those films eventually led to several surgeries and changes in his body. He transformed his appearance again for his Oscar-winning role in ‘The Whale,’ using prosthetics to play a withdrawn teacher. Now, Fraser has a more seasoned look that shows both his years in the film industry and the health issues he’s faced.
Haley Joel Osment

Haley Joel Osment rose to global fame as a child after starring in the 1999 thriller ‘The Sixth Sense’. As he’s grown up, his appearance has changed dramatically from the small and delicate boy audiences remember. Now sporting a beard and a more muscular physique, he’s taken on a variety of roles in shows like ‘The Boys’ and ‘Silicon Valley’. While he continues to work as an actor, many fans are surprised by how much he’s changed since his days as a child star.
Edward Furlong

Edward Furlong became famous very quickly as a teenager when he played John Connor in the hit movie ‘Terminator 2: Judgment Day’. He later faced public struggles with addiction, which affected both his career and how he looked. More recently, Furlong has been working on getting sober and has made some appearances at fan events and in smaller movies. His appearance today shows the challenges he’s overcome since his early success, including his role as a young star in ‘American History X’.
John Travolta

I still remember when John Travolta burst onto the scene with ‘Grease’ and ‘Saturday Night Fever’ – that hair, that physique, he was everywhere! Over the years, he’s definitely played around with his look for different roles, trying out all sorts of hairstyles and facial hair. But honestly, seeing him completely bald now is a bit of a shock. It’s a huge change from those iconic pompadours, and when you combine that with just the natural process of aging, it’s hard to reconcile the guy we see today with the young, electrifying disco king from ‘Pulp Fiction’ that I – and so many others – first fell in love with.
Robert Downey Jr.

For over ten years, Robert Downey Jr. was known for his portrayal of Tony Stark in the Marvel movies, maintaining a consistent appearance. But his latest role in the 2024 miniseries ‘The Sympathizer’ saw a huge change. Downey Jr. used wigs, prosthetics, and makeup to play many different characters, often becoming almost unrecognizable, even to longtime fans. This ability to transform demonstrates his dedication to acting now that he’s moved on from playing Iron Man.
Mark Hamill

Mark Hamill is best known for playing Luke Skywalker in the original ‘Star Wars’ films. Before the first movie came out, he was in a severe car accident and needed facial surgery, which slightly changed his appearance over the years. As he’s gotten older, Hamill has become a seasoned actor, often sporting a beard and a more weathered look, as seen in ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’. He looks quite different now compared to the young farm boy audiences first met in ‘A New Hope’.
Matthew Lewis

Matthew Lewis became well-known for playing Neville Longbottom in the ‘Harry Potter’ movies. Throughout the ten years the films were made, he changed a lot physically. Early on, they used costumes and fake teeth to alter his appearance. By the last movie, ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2’, he had become fit and his face had changed dramatically. This transformation became incredibly popular online, and it helped him land more adult roles, such as in ‘Me Before You’.
Christian Bale

Christian Bale is famous for dramatically changing his body for roles, often gaining and losing a lot of weight. He famously lost a dangerous amount of weight for the film ‘The Machinist,’ then rapidly gained muscle to play Batman in ‘Batman Begins.’ He continued this pattern, gaining weight and shaving his head to convincingly play Dick Cheney in ‘Vice.’ Although he usually returns to a normal weight between movies, his constant physical changes always get fans of ‘The Prestige’ talking about how he looks now.
