As a dedicated fan who has grown up alongside these iconic characters, the passing of Shannen Doherty and Luke Perry has left an indelible mark on my heart. Their roles in Beverly Hills 90210 were more than just entertainment; they were a significant part of my formative years, shaping my understanding of friendship, love, and life’s complexities.
In a recent chat, Jason Priestley openly discussed the deaths of Shannen Doherty and Luke Perry from his “Beverly Hills, 90210” cast, events that made him ponder his own life’s transience.
According to an interview with Mirror, the actor has shared with People Magazine that he has been deeply impacted by the deaths of his previous on-screen colleagues.
In case you didn’t know, Perry passed away from a stroke in March 2019, while Doherty lost her life to breast cancer in July 2024 following a long struggle with the disease.
Priestley expressed that his 50th birthday made him contemplate his own mortality, realizing he had already lived the majority of his life. When discussing Perry, he mentioned that his death came as a complete surprise because there were no signs of illness. He also shared that they were not only friends but also neighbors who often spent significant time together, having many shared experiences.
Apart from discussing the matter, Jason Priestley also paid tribute to the late Shannen Doherty. He expressed his admiration for her resilience and strength throughout her life. Despite knowing about her illness, her passing came as a shock to many, including him. He further stated that she fought her condition valiantly, giving the impression that she had it under control… until she didn’t, unfortunately.
In simpler terms, the actress from Private Eyes said she was a strong presence, and he considered himself lucky to have spent the last two years with her. Priestley further explained, “I felt at peace about her death because there was nothing more we needed to discuss between us.”
Actor Tori Spelling shared that their Beverly Hills 90210 co-stars’ group chat is a lively gathering place, where it seems as though no time has passed since they last met. Jason Priestly commented on the ongoing humor and witty banter among them. Moreover, he pointed out that since some of them have become fathers, there’s an abundance of questionable “dad jokes” being shared within their circle.
90210 co-stars have also shared their feelings about the deaths of Perry and Doherty, similar to how Jennie Garth, who worked on Charmed with Shannen, expressed her emotions to Entertainment Tonight. She described Shannen as a sister she grew up with, having met at a young age and spent much of their development together.
