‘The Rings of Power’ Season 2 Gets Historic Rating in Some Countries

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in Middle Earth, I must admit, I was taken aback by the mature rating for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2. Being someone who grew up watching Peter Jackson’s trilogy, I can’t help but feel a bit nostalgic when I see those familiar scenes of Helm’s Deep or Mount Doom.

Despite facing heavy criticism and even hostility, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has emerged as a successful series on Amazon Prime Video. As we’ve previously reported, the program has been renewed for a second season, with its eight new episodes slated to debut on August 29, 2024. It will be intriguing to watch how things unfold, particularly in light of the showrunners’ recent significant revelations.

Previously, we’ve discussed various anticipated elements of the upcoming season, including Sauron’s enhanced presence, a potential genre shift, and the continuation of the storyline similar to the first season. We’ve also highlighted improvements suggested by the trailers, indicating that the second season might surpass the first one in quality.

Just a few days prior to its debut, it’s been confirmed that the second season has been rated as Mature (18+) in Canada and various other countries worldwide. This suggests that the upcoming season is undeniably targeting more mature themes and content.

To clarify, it’s been disclosed that the second installment of The Rings of Power has earned an 18+ (Mature) rating in Canada, along with other nations. Although no specific reason was provided, it is speculated that the series won’t feature additional violence or explicit content. Instead, it’s expected that Sauron’s torment of Celebrimbor will be portrayed graphically and directly, potentially causing unease for certain viewers.

The rating for “The Lord of the Rings” is particularly significant because none of its previous adaptations received such a rating. For instance, Peter Jackson’s first trilogy, including “The Fellowship of the Ring,” was rated 7+ in Canada on Prime Video, while “The Two Towers” earned a 16+ due to the Battle of Helm’s Deep. “The Return of the King” was also rated 13+, the same as “The Rings of Power” Season 1. Interestingly, the “Hobbit” trilogy never exceeded a 16+ rating, with “An Unexpected Journey” being rated 13+, and the other two films (“The Desolation of Smaug” and “The Battle of the Five Armies”) also receiving a 16+.

Let’s observe whether these changes enhance the program’s overall standard; we’re crossing our fingers it proves worthwhile. Meanwhile, it’s important to mention that the series maintained its TV-14 rating within the U.S. market.
