As an ardent fan of the Alien franchise, I must confess that my heart skipped a beat when I heard about Alien: Romulus! The movie has left critics spellbound with its stunning 82% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The new faces in the cast have added fresh excitement to the long-running series, and I can’t wait to see how they bring their characters to life on the big screen.
In the U.S., Alien: Romulus has finally hit theaters, boasting an impressive 82% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. As the eighth addition to the much-loved series, it’s generating plenty of excitement among fans, but there’s a noticeable change in the film’s tone and cast. Here’s a comprehensive breakdown of Alien: Romulus’ stellar ensemble.
Rain Carradine played by Cailee Spaeny
2024 has been a fantastic year for Cailee Spaeny. The actress recently starred in the blockbuster film Civil War, earning over USD 122.6 million globally, sharing the screen with Kirsten Dunst. Additionally, she boasts an impressive resume that includes roles in Priscilla, Mare of Easttown, and Bad Times at the El Royale. Notably, she will soon be seen in the sequel to Knives Out and Wake Up Dead Man.
On a toxic mining planet reminiscent of Ellen Ripley’s world, portrayed by Sigourney Weaver, resides a young Xenomorph hunter named Rain. This formidable female creature lost her parents in the harsh environment, but found companionship in Andy, a synthetic individual, played by David Jonsson, whom she considers as her brother. Despite her longing for escape from this desolate world, the oppressive grip of the Weyland-Yutani corporation keeps her and the other workers trapped.
In their journey, Rain reunites with her old acquaintance Tyler (portrayed by Archie Renaux) and his group. Their objective is to recover cryo pods from what appears to be an abandoned space station. However, they soon discover that it’s anything but deserted. The station is teeming with lethal alien beings. As the horror unfolds, Rain finds herself in a struggle for existence, ultimately being the last human standing against these terrifying circumstances.
Andy played by David Jonsson
After making his debut in the romantic comedy film Rye Lane back in 2013, David Jonsson has solidified his acting skills by playing a pivotal role in Alien: Romulus.
To Rain, Andy – who was originally designed as an android but later repurposed – feels like the most significant family she still has. Her father found him during a mining expedition and reprogrammed him with a priority for Rain’s wellbeing.
The situation becomes ominous when Rain inserts an apparently dormant android’s chip into Andy, thinking it might aid their evasion from Facehugger swarms. However, this chip actually belonged to Rook, the detached and strategic science officer of the space station, whose primary duty was to protect Weyland-Yutani’s interests.
Under Rook’s control, Andy starts behaving strangely aloof, viewing the human team more as means for his survival rather than friends. However, Rain is able to bring Andy back to his normal self, though at a cost; the effects of his encounter with the ruthless hybrid offspring still linger.
Tyler Played By Archie Renaux
26-year-old Archie Renaux portrayed the significant character Tyler in the series “ Alien: Romulus“. This British actor has also been seen in Marialy Rivas’ suspenseful series “The Jetty” and Carlson Young’s romantic-comedy “Upgraded”. Renaux boasts an impressive list of other notable roles, such as those in “Body of Water”, “Catherine Called Birdy”, “The Other Zoey”, and the widely acclaimed Netflix show “Shadow and Bone”.
In Fede Álvarez’s film, an actor portrays Tyler, a resident of a mining colony. He grows weary of Weyland-Yutani’s oppressive control over the settlement. As a result, he concocts a scheme to retrieve cryopods from the abandoned Romulus space station as a means of escape. Unfortunately, the operation spirals out of control, leading the team into a harrowing ordeal as Xenomorphs start picking them off one by one.
In the midst of the terrifying ordeal, Tyler could only watch as his friends, including his sister Kay, succumbed to the extraterrestrial threat. Ultimately, Tyler too was overpowered and captured by these mysterious beings.
Kay Played By Isabela Merced
Despite Isabela Merced appearing in Madame Web, it’s worth noting that she boasts an impressive acting resume, such as roles in Stefano Sollima’s Sicario: Day of the Soldado, Hannah Marks-directed Turtles All the Way Down, and the lead in Dora and the Lost City of Gold. She also shared screen time with Mark Wahlberg in Instant Family, but her most notable role after Alien: Covenant might be Hawkgirl in James Gunn’s highly anticipated DC film Superman.
In Alien: Romulus, Isabela Merced takes on the role of Kay, the compassionate and quietly spoken core of the team composed of Rain and Andy. Kay exhibits kindness and frequently seeks solace in her brother, Tyler during their challenging living conditions. Their brother-sister relationship serves as a pillar of strength, but it also exposes Kay’s vulnerability as the story progresses.
Bjorn played by Spike Fearn
As a dedicated follower, I’ll share some details about Spike Fearn’s character Bjorn from the movie “Tell Me Everything” and “Aftersun.” Bjorn happens to be Tyler’s cousin in our storyline. He is known for his unpredictable and volatile nature within the group, much like a loose cannon.
As Bjorn’s companion, Navarro, is attacked by a Facehugger on the space station, fear and mistrust drive him to make a desperate bid for freedom, even from Andy. But his escape plan is abruptly halted when he encounters a fully-grown Xenomorph, its lethal acidic blood causing severe damage to his body, making him the first victim.
Navarro played by Aileen Wu
A Chinese-American actress who was previously seen in Closing Doors landed her breakout role as Navarro in Alien: Romulus. In this film, Navarro plays the pilot leading the team to the Romulus station. However, their mission takes a turn for the worse, and Navarro finds herself at the heart of a terrifying ordeal. After Andy, Tyler, and Bjorn barely survive a room full of Facehuggers, one of these creatures attaches itself to Navarro. The fear escalates when a Chestburster bursts out from her chest.
