As a die-hard Sepultura fan since their early days, the mere hint of a potential reunion of the iconic lineup has me dancing like a possessed headbanger. I can still remember the first time I heard “Arise” or “Chaos A.D.” – it was as if a bolt of lightning struck my metal heart!
Is there a chance we might see Sepultura’s legendary lineup come together one last time for a heartfelt goodbye? While no official announcements have been made, there seems to be a glimmer of hope, as both long-time guitarist Andreas Kisser and former lead vocalist Max Cavalera have expressed openness to the idea. In a recent interview with Metal Hammer, Kisser stated that any potential reunion involving the Cavalera brothers should be a joyful and uplifting experience.
Kisser mentioned that while he didn’t exclude the idea, it should be an extraordinary event emphasizing the band’s history and achievements instead of revisiting old disagreements. In other words, “[It] would be fantastic if they could join us for a final performance, but it needs to be spectacular.”
As a fan, I can’t help but feel that the raucous cries of “Fight! Fight! Fight!” echoing like Jerry Springer’s shows might ignite the crowd and sensationalize the media, it’s not something we should aspire to, is it? Instead, let’s gather to celebrate unity, rather than rehashing past disputes. After all, even metal music has its roots in expressing love, don’t you think?
Kisser’s statements follow Max Cavalera’s views expressed in an interview with Rock Hard Greece. In this interview, Max hinted at the idea but shared he hadn’t been asked about it yet. Additionally, Cavalera brought up Kisser’s previous statements where he had expressed skepticism towards a reunion, saying something like “No, why would we do that? To spoil the fun?”
What Max Cavalera said about a Sepultura reunion
“Indeed, it appears to me that Andreas mentioned something along the lines of, ‘Why bother asking? They’ll ruin the fun,’ which is quite characteristic of him. I believe I’ll let events unfold naturally without interference. If there ever comes a point when we feel a reunion is necessary — well, I suppose that’s acceptable as long as it’s done correctly. Just like with these remakes [of early Sepultura albums]. I think we handled them appropriately — sincerely, accurately, and from the heart.”
As a passionate gamer, I can relate to the confusion Cavalera is feeling. Just like how I can’t imagine my life without the thrill of gaming, he can’t fathom the idea of living without music. The band’s decision to announce their final tour leaves me puzzled. Was it a compulsion, or a mutual agreement that they’ve had enough? Frankly, I’m not sure. But one thing is certain, I need music like I need air, and I can’t help but wonder if they feel the same way too.
A brief history of Sepultura
If you’re not already acquainted with Sepultura, a heavy metal band whose name means ‘grave’ in Portuguese, let me fill you in on their remarkable background. The duo was established in 1984 by Max Cavalera and his brother Igor Cavalera in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Over time, Sepultura emerged as a significant influence within the heavy metal genre, particularly noted for groundbreaking albums such as “Arise” (1991) and “Chaos A.D.” (1993), along with popular tracks like “Refuse/Resist” and “Territory.” Unfortunately, Max parted ways with the band in 1996 due to internal disputes, paving the way for Derrick Green to join as the new vocalist.
Igor Cavalera was part of the band until 2006, at which point Jean Dolabella took over on drums. After leaving the group, neither Max nor Igor has returned to Sepultura, although they continue to thrive in their music careers. Some Sepultura fans argue that without the Cavaleras, there is no Sepultura, just as some Freddy Krueger fans believe only Robert Englund can truly portray Freddy. However, it’s important to note that they have not suffered a lack of success following their departure from the band.
For example, Max is known for creating both Soulfly and Cavalera Conspircy (with his brother Igor), whereas Igor has diversified into numerous musical endeavors. The dissolution of Sepultura was a difficult choice, encompassing the band members, Max’s wife Gloria, and the tragic passing of Max’s stepson. During this period of mourning, it is said that the band chose to dismiss Gloria and reportedly tried to expedite the funeral proceedings.
Based on my personal experiences as a musician and business owner, I empathize with Max’s sentiments in this situation. It can be frustrating when those who work closely with us, like Gloria, don’t seem to appreciate the efforts we put into supporting them. In my career, I too have had people working for me without earning a penny but solely out of passion for the music. However, I believe that it is essential to acknowledge their hard work and dedication, rather than taking advantage of their goodwill.
Years later, when discussions arose about his wife’s impact on Sepultura’s disbandment, Max made it clear by saying, “I take responsibility for Sepultura breaking up. I’d rather shoulder the blame instead.”
For now, it’s just talk
Max’s separation from the band was challenging and full of difficulties, but whether forgiveness can occur largely hinges on the personality traits of each band member. Although it’s unclear if they’ll ever reform as an original lineup, fans eagerly anticipate such a reunion, reminiscing about Sepultura’s glory days. The impact that the band has had on metal music is permanent, and any potential reunion would be a significant moment in the world of heavy metal.
On the other hand, it seems that both sides acknowledge that any reunion should be handled with care, preserving the band’s history and emphasizing the music that made them famous worldwide. For the time being, there might be a possibility, though it’s not yet certain, as the door to this potential event is still slightly open.
