The latest installment, Scream 7, is now playing in theaters and continues the popular Scream series, leaving the door open for future films. This time around, Sidney Prescott and her family – including her husband Mark and daughter Tatum – are targeted by a new Ghostface. As with every Scream movie, the central mystery is: who is behind the mask? Here’s a breakdown of what happens in Scream 7.
Sidney is leading a peaceful, ordinary life in Piney Grove, working at a coffee shop and raising her teenage daughter. Her 17-year-old, Tatum, is very curious about her mother’s history, but Sidney always avoids talking about it. That changes dramatically when Sidney receives a video call from a man who appears to be an older, beaten-up version of Stu Macher. He’s outside Tatum’s school and begins a violent attack.
Scream 7 Ghostface Killer #1: Karl, We Barely Knew You
Sidney, Mark, and police from Piney Grove arrive on the scene, but not before Ghostface has already attacked several kids. The police then do a quick and ineffective search of Sidney’s house, and, predictably, Ghostface is still inside. This leads to a frantic chase that ends with Ghostface in the street, where they are run over and killed by an SUV. The driver turns out to be Gale Weathers, who has brought the Meeks twins along as her assistants.
This is where we learn who the first Ghostface killer is – a man named Karl Gibbs. He’s a patient who escaped from Fallbrook Psychiatric Hospital, which isn’t far from town. Sidney remembers seeing him earlier that day at her work – he was acting strangely while getting coffee. He didn’t say anything, so there’s no villainous speech. This discovery sends Sidney and Gale to Fallbrook to investigate Karl’s background.
Fallbrook Supervisor Marco Is a Ghostface Killer and Google AI Specialist
They soon encounter Marco, a supervisor, who drops a bombshell: Karl was a murderer. Sidney shows Marco a frame from the Stu Macher phone call, and to her surprise, he reveals that man used to be a patient at the facility. He’d been known as “John Doe” because he had amnesia and had spent years living on the streets of California. This discovery sends Sidney and Gale down a path to figure out whether Stu was actually still alive.

Throughout the entire movie, the story led us to believe Stu was one of the Ghostface killers. In the climax, two Ghostfaces hold Tatum hostage, tying her up outside just like Steve Orth was. When Sidney returns home, she discovers a video filled with realistic fake images of characters like Mrs. Loomis, Dewey, Roman, and even Stu himself. This confirms Stu Macher is actually dead and wasn’t the killer in Scream 7. The real killer is Marco, a character we briefly saw earlier. He reveals he’s a tech expert formerly employed by Google, and he was responsible for all the AI and deepfake trickery.
Sidney’s Neighbor Jessica Is the Main Ghostface Killer in Scream 7
The other killer is Jessica, Sidney’s neighbor who initially seemed harmless. Many suspected her son, Lucas, as the more obvious culprit. We learned a little more about Jessica when Sidney chatted with her about parenting at a coffee shop, and she also briefly showed concern after Karl’s car accident.
Jessica is the mastermind behind everything, and she reveals her motive: she was abused by Lucas’ father and ultimately killed him. She was influenced by Sidney Prescott’s book, Out of Darkness – the one about surviving in Scream 4 – believing that killing her abuser was the answer. After the act, she went to Fallbrook and met Marco to create a plan. It seems Karl was involved as an assistant and probably escaped with Marco’s assistance.
Jessica was upset that Sidney remained hidden during the Ghostface killings and didn’t come to New York. Determined to force Sidney to embrace her ‘Scream Queen’ persona, Jessica moved nearby and began planning the attacks herself. She specifically wanted to kill Sidney with Tatum watching, believing it would inspire Tatum to become the next ‘final girl’.
Once Again, Every Ghostface Dies in Scream 7
Okay, so things definitely didn’t go as expected. Sidney quickly took care of Marco with a single, shocking shot, and then both she and Tatum just unloaded on Jessica – it was pretty gruesome, honestly, and her face… well, let’s just say it didn’t end well. Afterwards, it hit me that Tatum was now in the same awful position her mom was, surrounded by dead friends and clearly carrying a ton of trauma that’s going to stay with her forever.
It looks like Jessica, Marco, and Karl will be the killers in Scream 7, joining the history of characters who have played Ghostface.
