As a seasoned gamer with decades of dice-rolling and card-shuffling under my belt, I can confidently say that the upcoming Secret Lair x Dungeons & Dragons collaboration is a dream come true. Ever since the first time I encountered the dreaded Beholder in the dimly-lit corners of the Forgotten Realms, I’ve been waiting for the day when this iconic monster would grace the hallowed halls of Magic: The Gathering.
Rockwell once expressed a sense of constant observation, which could be interpreted as a commentary on living under public scrutiny, but there’s no hard evidence he wasn’t targeted by the enigmatic Beholder creature. This elusive menace has been troubling Dungeons & Dragons players since the game’s inception in 1975, and after half a century, it’s clear that combating such creatures is no easy feat. Magic: The Gathering acknowledges this and has announced Secret Lair x Dungeons & Dragons, limited edition card packs featuring D&D themes. We’re thrilled to give you sneak peeks at cards designed specifically for the Beholder!
These cards originate from a single scheduled release that begins on August 27th. Each release will showcase a unique legendary character from the unparalleled 50-year reign of Dungeons & Dragons. Here’s the schedule for these releases:
- Secret Lair x Dungeons & Dragons®: An Exhibition of Adventure
- Secret Lair x Dungeons & Dragons®: Astarion’s Thirst
- Secret Lair x Dungeons & Dragons®: Karlach’s Rage
- Secret Lair x Dungeons & Dragons®: Death is in the Eyes of the Beholder I
- Secret Lair x Dungeons & Dragons®: Death is in the Eyes of the Beholder II
All the cards presented here originate from “Death is in the Eyes of the Beholder II,” implying that not only will there be Magic: The Gathering (MTG) cards featuring the vampire rogue Astartion and the battle-seasoned Karlach, but you’ll find twice as many references to the Beholderings.
2022 stands out as a unique year for Dungeons & Dragons enthusiasts, and we couldn’t imagine a more fitting way to honor 50 years of such an extraordinary game than by merging our two games, stated Mark Heggen, Vice President of Collectibles at Magic: The Gathering. “Each of these Secret Lair drops symbolize the legacy and influence of Dungeons & Dragons, and it’s exhilarating that fans of Magic: The Gathering can participate in this celebration,” he added.
“It’s always amazing to witness the iconic artwork, monsters, and characters from D&D being manifested on Magic cards! The Secret Lair cards perfectly embody the spirit of D&D, providing fans of both games with a rare and exceptional addition to their collections,” said Jess Lanzillo, Vice President of Franchise and Product for D&D at Wizards of the Coast. “Whether you’re a fan of D&D, an avid Magic player, or someone who enjoys both, these releases offer a distinctive method to commemorate and bond with these games that have brought joy and camaraderie to fans for many years.”
Each item costs $29.99. Additionally, a Foil Edition of each item will be sold for $39.99 per piece. These items will become accessible on MagicSecretLair.com and the D&D Beyond Marketplace towards the end of this month.
