As a lifestyle expert with a rich background in film analysis, I find myself deeply moved by the character of Raka in the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. With a career spanning over two decades, I’ve seen countless characters come and go, but few have left such an indelible mark as Raka.
2024’s blockbuster movie “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” showcases an array of actors, among them Raka, a fresh character hailing from the Eagle Tribe. The storyline unfolds after Caesar’s demise and centers around Noa, a chimpanzee who was once enslaved by a cruel dictator, ultimately meeting a tragic end. The series has consistently incorporated diverse characters originating from various backgrounds, as demonstrated in the Caesar trilogy.
On her journey to liberate Ape planet, Noa meets Raka, a significant orangutan who plays a pivotal role in Noa’s growth. Yet, the persistent conflict within the Ape Kingdom leaves doubts about Raka’s fate.
Who is Raka?
In the Realm of Ape-World, Noa and Raka come face-to-face with Proximus Caesar’s military force, which is commanded by the gorilla Sylva. Sylva intends to eliminate the weak apes and enslave the strong ones. Sadly, Koro, Noa’s father, along with his companions, meet their demise in this army. As fate would have it, Noa crosses paths with Raka, who attempts to end Noa’s life, but in retaliation, they slay Raka’s partner, leaving him devastated by grief.
Raka, in deep sorrow, admits to belonging to the Order of Caesar. He has delved into Caesar’s teachings and literature, and now serves as a modern-day Maurice, chronicling Caesar’s deeds, treating them like holy scripture. Raka meticulously collects every manuscript and book related to Caesar, understanding the importance of knowledge and creativity in written form.
Raka educates Noa about Caesar and his efforts to create a better world for apes and humans. He admires Noa’s determination and sees her as a leader. Raka accepts Noa’s human, Nova, and is fascinated by her ability to talk. He agrees to help Noa and Nova attack Proximus’ lair and free slaves, following Caesar’s plan. Raka’s innocence and feisty nature make him a valuable character.
Sylva kills Raka
Raka, the tech-savvy guy, shows off his fighting abilities by protecting Noa and Nova in an open space. Maurice and Raka warn their foes not to underestimate apes. However, when Sylva and his goons trap Raka on a bridge, they plunge into the water, and Nova holds onto a net for survival. Both Raka and Maurice remind everyone again not to underestimate any ape.
In the scene that follows, Raka leaps into the river in an attempt to rescue someone. Miraculously, he succeeds, but just as he grasps the net, Sylva slices it, causing Raka to be swept away by the current and eventually drown. The camera captures Raka’s desperate struggle in the water, although it stops short of being too graphic, yet the tension is palpable. The tragic loss of another father figure, Raka, occurs at Sylva’s hands, making this situation even more painful. To make matters worse, Sylva captures Mae and Noa, leaving them in custody.
1. Mae demolishes Proximus’ camp by detonating a dam, causing a military bunker to fill with water, and thwarting him from acquiring weapons. Meanwhile, Sylva hunts down Noa but becomes trapped in pipes, viewing it as retribution for his conflict-ridden attitude towards apes. In the end, Noa departs, leaving Sylva to drown, a fitting consequence for his destructive actions, which ultimately lead to the destruction of Noa’s village.
1. Option A:
Can Raka return in a Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes sequel?
In the Planet of the Apes series, Raka is widely admired. He advocates for peaceful cohabitation among both species and serves as a bridge between the original trilogy and the newer films. At the end of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Raka’s chant hints at his presence, but it’s important to remember that this might be misleading, as Dawn of the Planet of the Apes also had a similar post-credits scene featuring a similar sound pattern.
The movie “War for the Planet of the Apes” showed that Koba was definitely dead, marking the end of his storyline. Koba’s actions, such as betraying Caesar and causing harm to his circle, made it clear that humans could not be trusted. Bringing back Koba would have meant telling the same story again, but if done in a new way, with Raka’s perspective, there could be an opportunity for it to feel fresh and natural.
In the future of the Planet of the Apes series, filmmaker Wes Ball is considering additional films featuring Mae (formerly known as Nova) collaborating with humans to regain their planet. If Noa manages to unite more tribes and goes to war, there’s a possibility that Raka might be brought back to life to aid him. It’s unclear whether it was primitive humans or aquatic-based apes who saved Raka from the water, but if revived, Raka could spread Caesar’s teachings, forge new alliances, and potentially reestablish human-ape cooperation.
In essence, Raka and Noa could take over the roles previously held by Maurice and Caesar. Above everything else, Mae harbors mistrust and fear. Interestingly, Noa handed her the chain that Raka had given him earlier. This token signifies trust and affection. It’s possible that Raka might be the one to bring them together and devise a plan to prevent their kind from engaging in another destructive war. With his cunningness and mediation abilities, he serves as a testament that not all apes are malicious. In the long run, Raka could transform into a spiritual leader, not through physical means but through mental and emotional influence, by using his words to persuade both parties.
