When Meghan Markle Said She Was Excited For ‘Representation’ During Kamala Harris’ 2020 Presidential Campaign

As a woman of color and a follower who admires strong, empowered figures like Meghan Markle and Kamala Harris, I find their journey and their words incredibly inspiring. Growing up, I too yearned to see someone who looked like me in positions of power, and seeing these two women break barriers and challenge the status quo is truly heartening.

Previously, Meghan Markle expressed support for Vice President Kamala Harris during the 2020 presidential election. After the Duke and Duchess of Sussex (Meghan Markle and Prince Harry) left the royal family in 2020 and moved back to the United States, Markle had a talk with Gloria Steinem.

She spoke about women in politics, specifically bringing up the subject of Harris, who was running for or vice president with then Presidential candidate Joe Biden. To the unversed, Harris is of Jamaican and Indian descent.

Meghan Markle showed enthusiasm about the possibility of greater racial diversity in the upcoming 2020 presidential election, as she noted that there could potentially be a Black vice president, which she found exhilarating because the Democratic Party has historically been strongly supported by Black women.

She further added, “You know, for me, being biracial, growing up, whether it was a doll or a person in office, you need to see someone who looks like you in some capacity.”

Meghan and Steinem discussed their shared worries on the topic of voter suppression. Specifically, the Duchess revealed that she has held talks with Democrat Stacey Abrams about tactics aimed at countering attempts made by certain individuals to hinder Black and other minority groups from voting.

59-year-old Harris has shown her backing for Markle as well. In 2019, she shared a video of the widely known mother of two, who discussed how the media negatively influenced her mental health while pregnant with her first child, Archie. Yet, it’s important to note that Markle hasn’t officially endorsed Harris’ presidential campaign as of now.

On July 20th, currently serving President Joe Biden decided not to run again for a second term, paving the way for Vice President Kamala Harris to formally declare her intention to run.

A variety of famous personalities such as Ariana Grande, George Clooney, Beyoncé, among others, have lent their support to Kamala Harris ahead of her potential matchup against Donald Trump in the 2024 U.S. presidential race.
