In a recent episode of the Dumb Blonde podcast, the 34-year-old musician who goes by the name Machine Gun Kelly (whose birth name is Colson Baker) discussed the impact of his childhood experiences on his music.

According to MGK, an incident occurred when he was nine years old in a room with his father. The tale he’s been familiarized with describes his father accidentally dropping a gun, causing it to explode and fatally wound him. His father and grandmother were charged for the murder, but both were found not guilty in the subsequent trial.

As a child, the artist often felt frustrated when his father reacted strongly to loud noises, as he would express his disapproval towards his father. The rapper admitted that he would respond with something along the lines of, “You’re supposed to be tough, man. Why are you acting like this?”, which ultimately led him to develop feelings of resentment towards his father.

He says that he sat and thought about a kid who was on trial at 9 years old for the murder of his father. He further mentioned that he had a very interesting talk with him on his deathbed about that moment.

In the show, MGK explained that he now realizes how difficult and traumatic his father’s early years likely were. “In my case with my father, he was so troubled by some of the most challenging experiences I can imagine a child could face, he had to find ways to cope. But he was up against almost every negative situation imaginable.”

Kelly continued by explaining how his celebrity status has been shaped by traits inherited from his father.MGK admits he’s presented himself as strong-willed enough to handle the challenges, scrutiny, and negativity that come with being famous.
