Sirius XM, a name whispered with the same cautious reverence as a provincial governor’s questionable land deals. Its shares, alas, have performed a most undignified tumble – a decline of sixty-five percent over the past five years. A precipice, one might say, from which few venture to leap, even with a feather mattress below. Yet, observe – a curious detail! Thirty-seven percent of this… enterprise, is held by Berkshire Hathaway. A stake accumulated during the reign of Mr. Buffett, a gentleman known for accumulating things, much like a magpie with a fondness for railway stock. This, naturally, compels one to squint, to examine the matter with a degree of suspicion, and perhaps, a sliver of hope.
Swimming Against a Tide of Static
It is generally considered sensible, a point often reiterated by accountants and men with excessively polished boots, to invest in ventures propelled by the grand currents of progress. Sirius XM, however, finds itself rather… adrift. A lone vessel, bobbing precariously in a sea of digital streams. It is, you see, a satellite operator. A quaint notion in an age where music, news, and the endless pronouncements of talking heads are delivered via the ether, faster than a samovar can boil. Apple, Spotify, YouTube – these are the titans now, and Sirius XM… well, it offers a slightly different flavor of noise. A flavor, some might argue, akin to damp wool.
The company reported revenue of eight and a half billion in the last accounting period, a sum respectable enough, yet diminished from the nine billion attained in the year of our Lord 2022. And the number of loyal subscribers – those who willingly pay for the privilege of hearing music beamed from the heavens – has dwindled to thirty-one point three million. A decline, gentle reader, that speaks volumes about the fickle nature of public taste and the irresistible allure of free content. One wonders if the engineers are secretly breeding pigeons to carry the signal instead.
A Most Peculiar March of Free Cash Flow
Growth, admittedly, is proving elusive. A phantom, forever just beyond reach. Yet, the company, against all expectations, is in… decent financial health. It carries a debt of nine point seven billion, a sum equivalent to almost one hundred and forty percent of its entire market capitalization. A monstrous figure, one might think, enough to frighten even the most seasoned gambler. But then, observe! Free cash flow soared by twenty-four percent in the last year, reaching one point two six billion. A most unexpected turn of events, like discovering a hidden stash of rubles in your grandmother’s attic.
The company, it seems, is nearing the end of a rather expensive period of satellite-related investment. Management anticipates a further increase in free cash flow, reaching one point five billion by the year of our Lord 2027. This, naturally, provides the company with the means to return capital to its shareholders. In the last accounting period, three hundred and sixty-five million was distributed in dividends, yielding a current rate of five point nineteen percent. And a further one hundred and thirty-six million was used to repurchase shares, a practice as mysterious and arcane as a gypsy’s fortune-telling.
The Valuation: A Most Disappointing Spectacle
The investment community, it appears, is unimpressed by this surge in free cash flow. The stock price, alas, has declined by eleven percent in the past year. A discouraging sign, to be sure, suggesting that the market may not reward the shares with a higher valuation. Sirius XM trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of merely seven point four. A humble number, easily overlooked amidst the glittering excesses of the modern market. A higher multiple, naturally, is not guaranteed. Unless, of course, a resurgence in revenue and subscriber growth occurs, investors seeking substantial capital gains should proceed with the utmost caution. One might even suggest a thorough examination of the company’s plumbing, just to be certain.
