As a dedicated Marvel fan with over two decades of fandom under my belt, I must say that Chris Evans’ surprise return as Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine was a delightful and unexpected twist. I remember watching him bring the Human Torch to life in the early days of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and seeing him back in action was like reconnecting with an old friend.
Fans were taken aback and thrilled by Chris Evans’ unexpected appearance as Johnny Storm (a.k.a. Human Torch) in the recent Marvel Cinematic Universe movie featuring Deadpool and Wolverine. Yet, his comeback was secretly planned, as Aaron Stanford, who played Pyro, shared how they concealed Evans’ role until the film hit the screens.
During a chat on Comic Book’s Phase Zero podcast, actor Aaron Stanford disclosed that some important scenes in Deadpool and Wolverine were photographed by paparazzi. This was possible due to their ability to approach an unguarded location near the main filming site.
Yet, it was by chance that the actor revealed Chris Evans’ comeback as the Human Torch was kept under wraps. He clarified that despite some initial set pictures spreading online, no photographs of Evans were leaked to the public.
The Tadpole actor reminisced, “We filmed that entire scene in a massive, post-apocalyptic landscape reminiscent of Mad Max,” explaining that the photos got out since “it was the only location we couldn’t safeguard as it was outdoors.”
As a lifestyle expert, I’d rephrase it this way: From my perspective, it’s common practice for the paparazzi to station themselves at a distance of roughly half a mile, armed with powerful telephoto lenses. Their goal? To snap those exclusive, behind-the-scenes shots for their upcoming stories about the movie. In other words, they’re providing “spoilers” to keep their audience engaged and informed.
Stanford explained that the actor from Ghosted wasn’t present in that specific scene because the scene was divided into “pre-strike and post-strike (SAG-AFTRA strike).” On the day the initial shot was filmed, both the actor and Evans were working simultaneously.
Speaking from my expertise in lifestyle matters, let me share an interesting tidbit about a production I was involved with. We took a break for several months to resolve a production issue, and upon our return, we filmed the final part of that sequence. However, it’s important to note that during this time, when the paparazzi swarmed near the set, Chris Evans wasn’t present.
During his interview, Aaron Stanford expressed that his cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine felt like an extension of his past portrayal as John Allerdyce / Pyro from X-Men: The Last Stand, but with a slightly different tone. He mentioned that he approached it as if he was reprising the character from the X-Men 2 film.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d put it this way: In discussing my character, I revealed that he started as a rebellious, marginalized teenager who underwent a dramatic transformation into a ruthless terrorist. Initially, I developed him as a comprehensive portrait, but when it came to fitting him into the unique world of Deadpool, I had to adapt and modify his character accordingly.
Shawn Levy’s Deadpool & Wolverine is now playing in theaters.
