The creators of the animated series Smiling Friends, Michael Cusack and Zach Hadel, have announced that the show will conclude after its third season.
They’re presenting this decision as personal, not something the network pushed for. In their announcement, they explained they were feeling exhausted after dedicating years to the show, but also believed it was a natural time to end things.
Why the creators are calling it quits
Cusack and Hadel prefer to end the show while it’s still strong and popular, rather than continuing it until it loses its appeal or they become burnt out. They want to leave audiences wanting more, instead of overstaying their welcome.
They’re also not interested in letting anyone else take over the show. They feel it’s too closely connected to their personal writing style and the amount of direct involvement they have to make it work with different creators.
Not a cancellation, and Adult Swim backed them up
According to the show’s creators, Adult Swim was understanding and encouraging when they shared their ideas, and the network didn’t push them to continue if they didn’t want to.
They’re leaving the possibility open for a return in the future, suggesting they might do a special or additional episodes if they have a good idea and it feels like the right time.
Two more Smiling Friends episodes air April 12
Here’s some good news: two more episodes from Season 3 are completed and will premiere on Adult Swim on April 12th at 11 p.m.
They want to make it clear these aren’t major season endings. Instead, they’re simply additional episodes for Season 3, bringing the total number of episodes to ten.
What happens next
According to Cusack and Hadel, this isn’t a permanent split – they plan to collaborate on future projects, but Smiling Friends won’t be continuing as a weekly show.
The show’s finale will be tough for viewers, but it’s good that they’re getting a definite conclusion instead of a maybe-it-will-return situation. They’ll have two final episodes to wrap things up.
