As a child of the ’90s, I can vividly recall the days when Rachael Lillis‘ voice filled our Saturday mornings with magic and laughter, as she breathed life into characters like Misty and Jessie from Pokemon. Her performances were not just voices to us; they were an integral part of our childhood experiences, a testament to her extraordinary talent.
Rachael Lillis, who was renowned for playing Jessie and Misty in the Pokémon series, has tragically passed away following a long fight against cancer. Known for her voice acting roles since 1997, Lillis’ contributions to Pokémon have touched multiple generations. Heartbreakingly, she lost her life on August 10, at the age of 46, during her ongoing battle with breast cancer.
The Pokemon Company is expressing deep sadness upon learning of Rachael Lillis’ passing. Her memorable role in the Pokemon animated series has brought joy to countless fans who grew up with the characters she made come alive. Her legacy will live on, and we will forever hold her in our hearts. Our sympathies go out to her family and friends during this difficult time.
Lillis, born in New York City in 1978, initially pursued a career in opera but transitioned into voice acting in the 90s. Over the years, she has lent her voice to numerous TV shows, movies, and video games. In 1998, she gave life to Misty, a water-specialist gym leader, for the English version of the Pokémon anime. Misty was one of the show’s key characters, joining Ash, his Pikachu, and another gym leader, Brock, on their adventures.
Lillis lent her voice to characters like the villain Jessie from Team Rocket, as well as various Pokémon creatures such as Jigglypuff, Vulpix, Venonat, and Goldeen. She was featured in a massive 423 episodes of the Japanese animated series, which was one of the most popular franchises during the ’90s.
By May 2024, a GoFundMe initiative launched by Lillis’s sister disclosed that Lillis was diagnosed with breast cancer. Some of her acting peers generously circulated this fundraiser to support her medical expenses.
In a heartfelt message, Veronica Taylor, a fellow coworker of Lillis, broke the sad news. Taylor, best recognized as the voice of Ash Ketchum in the Pokemon dub, penned down, “Many are familiar with Rachel Lillis through her exceptional roles. She brightened our Saturday mornings and pre-/post-school hours with her enchanting voice, impeccable comic delivery, and extraordinary acting abilities,” she conveyed to her fans.
“Rachael was an exceptional artist, her voice radiated brilliance whether talking or singing. She left an indelible mark on our hearts through her vibrant roles in various productions, particularly her iconic characters Misty and Jessie from Pokemon. Rachael deeply appreciated the kindness and encouragement she received during her cancer fight, it greatly uplifted her spirit. At this time of mourning, her family asks for privacy to grieve. A tribute event will be arranged at a later date.”
Lillis additionally portrayed roles in series such as Hunter x Hunter, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Winx Club, while lending his voice to several Pokémon in the Super Smash Bros. video game franchise.
