‘Mortal Kombat II’ Trailer Puts Johnny Cage in the Hot Seat and Demands He Step Up

After a long wait, Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for Mortal Kombat II. Although the movie’s release date was moved from October 2025 to May 2026, this new trailer gives fans a first look at the action. It hints at larger-scale battles, a deeper storyline, and the famously violent ‘fatalities’ translated for the big screen.

The new movie focuses on the legendary Mortal Kombat tournament itself. This sequel, unlike the first film from 2021, really brings the famous competition to life. Karl Urban stars as Johnny Cage, a former Hollywood star who is recruited by Raiden and Sonya Blade to participate in the dangerous event.

The game features both returning and brand new characters on the hero side, including Cole, Kitana, and Jax. Leading the villains is Shao Kahn, supported by Baraka, Sindel, and Quan Chi. The classic rivalry between Scorpion and Sub-Zero continues, but this time Sub-Zero appears as his shadowy alter ego, Noob Saibot.

During a panel at New York Comic-Con last year, director Simon McQuoid shared that the upcoming sequel will expand on the gritty and brutal tone of the opening fight between Scorpion and Sub-Zero from the 2021 reboot, delivering a full-length experience of that intensity. Ed Boon, the franchise’s creative director, promised the new film will be even more intense, saying viewers might even shed a tear during the opening scene.

At New York Comic Con, McQuoid and writer Jeremy Slater revealed that the sequel will build upon the world established in the first film. Expect a larger cast of characters, a richer backstory, and significantly more action. Ed Boon hinted that the sequel will feature twice as many fight scenes as the original. According to Slater, characters will embark on individual journeys and quests outside of the main tournament, adding depth to their development throughout the story.

The new Mortal Kombat II movie will be released in theaters on May 8th. Warner Bros. is so optimistic about the series that they’re already working on a third film.

Now that the tournament is the main focus and the game features a much bigger roster of characters, the new sequel seems poised to deliver exactly what fans have wanted.
