Leonardo DiCaprio‘s most celebrated films are often those he’s made with director Martin Scorsese. Their partnership began with the historical drama Gangs of New York in 2002, and they’ve since collaborated on several hugely popular and critically acclaimed movies like The Departed, Shutter Island, and The Wolf of Wall Street. It’s clear Scorsese consistently draws exceptional performances from DiCaprio.
Their latest project, Killers of the Flower Moon, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and stars DiCaprio alongside another frequent Scorsese collaborator, Robert De Niro. The film, an epic about the 1920s murders in the Osage Nation of Oklahoma, has received widespread praise and further solidifies DiCaprio and Scorsese’s partnership as one of the most significant and long-lasting in film history.
Leonardo DiCaprio’s admiration for Martin Scorsese began when he first saw his favorite film. He shared in an interview that Taxi Driver had a profound impact on him. He remembers watching it at age 15 and being completely captivated by Travis Bickle, feeling a strong connection and understanding for the character—until he was ultimately disappointed by his choices.
DiCaprio connected with the script because he initially identified with the main character, but then felt shocked as the character’s true nature was revealed, making him question who he thought he knew. He considers the film to be the greatest independent film ever made. Scorsese agrees, crediting Paul Schrader’s script as the driving force behind the film’s success. The script came to Scorsese through Brian De Palma, and was actually born out of a challenging time in Schrader’s own life – he wrote it while living in his car and struggling with a severe ulcer.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese continue their successful partnership, with DiCaprio currently preparing to film their next project, the psychological thriller What Happens at Night, in Prague. The film, based on Peter Cameron’s novel, will also star Jennifer Lawrence, Mads Mikkelsen, and Patricia Clarkson, and begins filming this month.
Beyond his work with Scorsese, DiCaprio is receiving critical acclaim for his role in Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, which recently won six BAFTAs, including Best Film. He’s also nominated for Best Actor at the upcoming Oscars. Loosely inspired by Thomas Pynchon’s Vineland, the film also features Sean Penn and Regina Hall, and will be available to stream on major platforms later this week.
Later this year, Leonardo DiCaprio will begin filming Michael Mann’s Heat 2, the eagerly awaited follow-up to the classic 1995 film. The new movie will explore events both before and after the original. DiCaprio will star with Christian Bale, creating what many believe is one of the most exciting actor pairings in years.
