‘They Iced Me Down’: Country Star Phil Vassar Claims He Died Twice After Cardiac Attack And Stroke

After reading about Phil Vassar‘s harrowing near-death experience, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of admiration for this resilient and inspiring figure. As someone who has faced their own brushes with mortality, I find myself deeply moved by Vassar’s story.

Country singer Phil Vassar shared his harrowing experience of surviving not one, but two near-death incidents – a heart attack and a stroke. In an interview with Taste of Country on August 8, he revealed that at the start of this year, he suffered a heart attack while on tour with Deana Carter during Christmas. Unfortunately, he can’t recall much about the event itself. Vassar attributed his medical emergency to congenital heart disease rather than various factors, as it is important to avoid any misleading assumptions in such circumstances.

Despite having a health-conscious upbringing, with no regular consumption of fried foods and a habitual exercise routine, Vassar still developed heart disease due to it running in his family.

“He mentioned he recently discovered he has a genetic condition affecting his heart. Despite not being a heavy drinker or partygoer, and maintaining a daily workout routine, he always prioritized his health by avoiding fried foods. Unfortunately, genetics eventually took its toll on him.”

At his home, country singer Phil Vassar experienced a heart attack, but swift emergency action saved his life. Medical professionals had to jolt him several times to restore his heartbeat, which unfortunately resulted in some fractured ribs. However, he expressed immense gratitude for their quick response and skill, acknowledging that they played an instrumental role in reviving him.

Three days post-heart attack, Vassar suffered a stroke within the hospital. He remembered feeling abnormally chilled, only later discovering that he had been kept at low temperatures. On two separate instances, he ceased breathing and his pulse was barely detectable for approximately 30 minutes each time.

He cooled me significantly, leaving me puzzled about the chill. Then they explained, “You’re frozen solid.” He shared that there were instances where his heart stopped beating for half an hour, twice.

Vassar has been asked about his close brush with death and recalls feeling ill, a sensation he attributes as normal for those who have come so close to dying.

“Thank goodness for medicine,” he said, appreciating how it aided his recovery.

After a successful recovery from a heart attack as well as injuries sustained in a car accident, Vassar has returned to performing live and has given more than 100 shows. He is deeply appreciative of the progress made in medical science.

In June of this year, Phil Vassar confided in PEOPLE’s audience about his collaboration with Jeffrey Steele on a song called “Hollywood Hillbillies”. This track marked the beginning of his tour following his heart attack, which he initiated afterwards.

“After experiencing a significant event like a heart attack, one tends to become more reflective and emotional,” he shared in February. “My intention is to create music that mirrors this newfound introspection.”

Vassar navigated a vast health ordeal with her insightful and emotional nature intact.

Apart from sharing his enhanced health and upbeat demeanor, he added, “I am brimming with vitality and sporting a fresh perspective on life. I’m eager to embark on my journey, and I’m all set to give it my best shot!”
