Is it possible to build a successful movie series around Spider-Man characters without actually including Spider-Man himself? Sony initially seemed to prove it could. The first Venom movie earned over $850 million worldwide, and its sequels also performed well. However, other Spider-Man-less films didn’t fare so well. Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter were not successful, receiving poor reviews and disappointing ticket sales. Despite this, Sony isn’t abandoning its Spider-Man universe and plans to restart it with a fresh cast and crew.
During an appearance on The Town podcast, Sony Pictures CEO Tom Rothman discussed the future of their Spider-Man movies. He confirmed that the studio hasn’t abandoned the idea of continuing the live-action Spider-Verse films. When asked if Sony would revisit those movies and if future installments would be a complete restart, Rothman answered with a clear “yes” twice. He also confirmed that a reboot would involve a new cast of actors.

Okay, so a live-action Spider-Verse movie? It feels like a done deal, honestly. This franchise is just too big for Sony to let go. But here’s the thing: they absolutely have to address the problems with the first attempt if they want a reboot to succeed. It’s not enough to just bring it back – they need to fix what wasn’t working.
Venom proved popular enough to support multiple movies on its own. However, characters like Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter haven’t reached that level of recognition and need Spider-Man to draw audiences. It doesn’t necessarily have to be Peter Parker; a live-action Miles Morales or Gwen Stacy could just as easily connect these films into a Spider-Verse.
