‘It Has Been A Nightmare’: Producer Christine Vachon Breaks Silence On Joaquin Phoenix’s Sudden Exit From Todd Haynes’ Queer Film

As a dedicated fan of Joaquin Phoenix and Todd Haynes, I find myself deeply engrossed in this intriguing saga unfolding before our eyes. The news of Phoenix’s departure from their shared project has sent shockwaves through the film community, and now, Christine Vachon, the producer, has shed some light on the matter.

The departure of Joaquin Phoenix from Todd Haynes’ production sparked interest among many. Now, Christine Vachon, the movie’s producer, has spoken up, shedding light on the lingering dispute.

According to a Deadline report, Killer Films founder Vanchon took to Facebook to share an article discussing Joker’s lead actor stepping away from the project. She addressed rumors suggesting that Phoenix’s departure was connected to the potential NC-17 rating or LGBTQ+ themes in the film.

According to People magazine, the producer stated, “This event did occur, and it’s been a nightmare.” She also requested, “If you are considering criticizing or warning us about ‘hiring a straight actor,’ please refrain from doing so.”

Christine asserted that the concept originated from Phoenix, whom he presented to them. She penned, “This was HIS brainchild that he shared with US— and it’s well-known that Killer has an outstanding track record when it comes to collaborating with LGBTQ actors, crew members, and directors.” (For those of you who are aware— please remember that you are exacerbating an already difficult situation.)

According to reports, the actor from “The Her” movie allegedly walked off the set of a queer film two weeks ago in Guadalajara, Mexico. Since then, producers have been working hard to reorganize and save the project before it falls apart completely. The local crew members are yet to be compensated for their work.

For those unfamiliar, this movie tells a story set in the 1930s where two men embark on a romantic journey, departing from Los Angeles for Mexico. Vachon and Pam Koffler collaborated as producers on this shared endeavor. Alongside Phoenix, Danny Ramirez was also part of the film’s cast.

As a lifestyle expert, I recently chatted with Deadline, where director Haynes expressed his enthusiasm for an intriguing upcoming project. In further discussion about the endeavor, Haynes emphasized that this film would be distinct in its approach and aesthetic compared to others in the genre.

The director disclosed that the film is a romantic tale from the 1930s featuring an unconventional couple of different races, whom he described as “an unusual duo.” Moreover, he mentioned that the renowned actor, Phoenix, will be part of this movie.

Two years ago, the Gladiator star brought early concepts to Haynes about the story and setting for their project. The director explained that he and his partner Jon Raymond collaborated with the actor on writing the script, collectively crafting what they refer to as this “shared creation.” He described it as feeling “innovative, invigorating, and thrilling.”

Meanwhile, Phoenix is preparing for the upcoming movie titled “Joke: Folie A Deux,” which co-stars Lady Gaga. The film’s anticipation is quite high due to the previous Joker’s success (released in 2019) and Gaga stepping into the role of Harley Quinn, a popular pop star.

According to reports, the actor is planning to kick off his promotional events for the upcoming movie, which is set to hit American theaters on October 4, 2024.
