Jason Bateman has been sharing how a key moment changed his life. The actor and director recently revealed he didn’t get serious about sobriety until 2004, three years into his marriage with Amanda Anka.
After ten years of heavy drinking – a lifestyle he once jokingly compared to the excesses in the movie Scarface – Bateman realized the increasing tension at home couldn’t continue. He decided to stop his hard-partying ways to safeguard his family and his future.
Getting sober wasn’t a sudden event for Bateman; it was a gradual process. He admitted it took several years of marriage – now approaching 25 years – before he truly achieved sobriety. He remembers many conversations with his wife, Anka, about when he would finally stop his wild lifestyle. Anka was honest about her struggles, explaining that his unpredictable behavior was becoming too much to cope with.
Bateman initially thought he had plenty of time to enjoy his wild lifestyle, but he quickly realized it was putting a huge strain on his wife. He decided to make a change immediately to save their relationship. This meant ending years of drug and alcohol use and embracing a much calmer, more stable life. The transformation has been so significant that friends, like Jimmy Kimmel, now playfully tease him about living like a “grandpa,” pointing out that he’s usually home before 10 p.m.
Anka first met Bateman in 1988, but avoided dating him for a decade because of his party-going reputation. She’s witnessed his change firsthand, describing how he’s gone from a notorious Hollywood figure to someone who prefers quiet nights in with frozen yogurt. This newfound stability in his personal life fueled a major comeback in his career, allowing him to transition from a former child star facing obscurity to an award-winning actor and successful producer.
Jason Bateman is currently very busy with a number of exciting projects. He’ll be starring as Clark in the new HBO limited series DTF St. Louis, which premieres on March 1st. This dark comedy centers around a dangerous love triangle with older characters and features a strong cast including David Harbour, Linda Cardellini, and Richard Jenkins. Bateman is also an executive producer on the show through his production company, Aggregate Films.
Beyond acting, Bateman is producing the independent crime thriller Evil Genius, directed by his friend Courteney Cox. The film is based on the true story of the 2003 “pizza bomber” case and stars Patricia Arquette and David Harbour.
Bateman also continues to host the popular “SmartLess” podcast, which has recently secured a deal to continue for years to come. His wife, Amanda Anka, is also working in the industry, recently producing the critically acclaimed drama The Morning Show.
