Sony Confirms Spider-Man Spinoff Universe Reboot With New Cast

I’m really excited to hear that Sony is giving its Spider-Man universe a fresh start! Tom Rothman confirmed they’re rebooting it, and it sounds like we’ll be seeing a whole new cast of actors taking on these roles. It’s a big change, but I think it’s a great opportunity to explore these characters in a new way.

During an appearance on Matt Belloni’s The Town podcast, Sony Pictures CEO Tom Rothman stated that the shared Spider-Man Universe – often called the “Sony Spider-Verse” – isn’t being abandoned, but will instead be rebooted.

When directly questioned about the plans for live-action Spider-Man movies beyond the animated ones, Rothman responded immediately.

“No,” he said when asked if it was dead.

When Belloni followed up about returning to those characters, Rothman confirmed: “Yes.”

Belloni asked if it would be a fresh reboot with new people.

Rothman: “Yes.”

Sony is planning a fresh start for its Spider-Man-related movies, effectively rebooting the universe that began with the Venom films starring Tom Hardy. This includes recasting actors and starting new storylines, though they’ve also recently announced an animated Venom movie.

What This Means For Sony’s Spider-Man Universe

Sony has already started building its own Spider-Man-related movie universe with films like Venom, Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter.

Although Venom did well in theaters, the following Spider-Man-related movies haven’t fared as well, receiving poor reviews and struggling to make money. Morbius became a popular internet joke, Madame Web was a major box office failure and received overwhelmingly negative feedback, and Kraven the Hunter didn’t attract audiences and was considered a complete disappointment.

Rothman’s statements indicate Sony is starting fresh with its universe, rather than attempting to continue the existing storylines.

The main question now is whether the new version of the series will continue to center around the villains, or if it will expand to include more of the Spider-Man world and connect more closely with other Marvel movies and shows.

There’s been talk that Sony is focusing on characters connected to Spider-Man, including Spider-Noir (with Nicolas Cage starring in an Amazon project), and other “Spider”-themed heroes like Spider-Punk and Spider-Gwen.

Marvel Partnership Still Strong

Rothman also addressed Sony’s partnership with Marvel Studios.

When asked how things are going between Sony and Marvel, Rothman responded: “It’s great.”

I’m so glad Sony and Marvel Studios are still working together on Spider-Man! It’s amazing that Sony still owns the rights to the character, but they’ve allowed Marvel Studios to collaborate on the Tom Holland films. They’ve really had a great partnership ever since Spider-Man: Homecoming, and I hope it continues for years to come!

Up next is Spider-Man: Brand New Day, out this summer.
